merritt is looking better and better and remember he is the only one to have beaten liu this season (albeit at the world indoor). richardson did not look that good last season either until he finished second in the usatf (and improved the rest of the season). as the world champion he might have the extra pressure and bulls eye on his back. on the other hand i believe DO peaked in 2010 and has not been the same since that great season. i think he should be glad to hold off the rest of the americans at the trials and finish in the 3rd spot.
