  • Sub 4:10 HS runners who never broke 4:00.

After reading the latest TandFnews article about the US sub 4s and where they went to HS, got me thinking about the fast HS milers who never broke 4. In Illinois from the 60's and 70's there is Tom Sullivan (4:02), Andy Rupert from Proviso West, Dave Merrick and Craig Virgin who all broke 4:10 in HS but never ran under 4. Others are Garry Bjorklund (4:05 in 1969), and Dirk Lakeman (4:04 in 77) from South Eugene.

And an entire army of California high schoolers! Nearly every season someone breaks 4.10, yet not all of them get under 4.00.

You can cross-reference with TFN sub-4 miler list. Some CA 800m preps (Gordon Johnson, 3.56 and Jim Sorensen 3.59) broke 4.00, but not 4.17 in high school.

Better question fastest sub 4:10 HS runner who never broke 4:00. Steve Magness or Gerry Lindgren? Obviously, Magness still has a shot at a sub 4.

Epelle, I don't see how useful that list is since Tim Danielson obviously broke 4 once in his career.

This list shows that CA has an over-abundance of sub 4.10-types, yet very few have gone on to run 3.59 or faster. Stember and a few others have also broken 4.00. Again, just the sheer numbers alone show that just because an athlete can run 4 x 62,4 , it doesn:t necessarily mean he will be able to run 4 x 59,9 in the future.

              Epelle,

Is your list is from marks that were achieved at the Cal State meet (thus, no mark from Danielson)? Although you are correct that an abundance of athletes didn't experience equal success in college, more than a handful did. Factor into the equation that once an athlete get's into college, they run many more 1500's than mile, and never really get the opportunity to run a fast "mile", but have run a 1500m under it's 4:00 equivalent, 3:42.1. Others achieved success at longer races.

Yes, these were achieved at CIF State Finals. I agree that several names are well-known, and some have run faster than 3.42,1. Many others, however, ended up in the 3.45-3.47 range in college, and did not materialize...they were consistent, and improved over high school, but not at the same rate as perhaps other athletes under 4.10 from other states.

I saw (at least) 9 from the list who broke 4:00 later on

no one would know more than most. I only counted five.

                    Who were the nine?

you could add Hunt 3:57.88, Greer 3:59.79 and Woods 3:54.4

I can find no sub 4's for Larry Greer, who was listed. You must be confusing him with Paul Greer (3:59.79, 1989).

                              Mark Schilling

                              Thom Hunt
... Doug Padilla - Marc Davis

I mistook Jim Arriola for Ed (that woulda been the ninth) - so no go on that one. But I give myself 1/2 point for not including Doug Padilla and Marc Davis, who are not on the list. Not sure about Marc but Doug ran significantly slower than 4:10 HS.

My 'familiarity' with the event and athletes fades significantly in mid to late 70s (as you are aware Malmo). It does look like others have filled in, however. Alas, my bro is on the list - then 'failed to' list, but he never ran seriously after HS.
