    Re: NCAA m5000—Lalang favored

The 5000 is after the 10,000, so it will be interesting to see how the doublers do. I am not certain of Lalang -- is barely qualified for the second round of the 1500, just making up enough of a gap in the last little run-in, beating out a couple of runners that did not make the next round. He was probably 40cms from not making it, and if it was 1490m he probably would have missed it, as he got lucky timing on the lean.

Levins has doubled a lot more than Lalang, and might handle two hard races better than Lalang. At the Big Ten 5000, where neither Ahmed nor Mead doubled, Ahmed absolutely dusted Mead with a surge over the last 600m stronger than I have ever seen he do (10 seconds gap over 600m).

No one is kicking with Levins now. Lalang will have to break him before the last 400 if he wants to win.

after watching the 1500 heats and the 10K final, I'm definitely in the Levins camp at this point.

Chris Derrick not running the 5,000m?

He was never entered. All eggs in the 10k basket. Interesting was Levins' sympathy for Derrick, even a little bit of inner conflict over denying someone very deserving of an NCAA title. Yet he clearly retained his competitive fire, his desire to win. A nice balance.

Now if it were me announcing this mid-race, and I noticed that Mitch Goose of Iona was running behind two Oregon guys, I'd have said.... wait for it...

Especially with that 10K in his legs.

One of the potentially great race calls . . . except that it never got made

If you've ever been to Cedar City, Utah, please raise your hand.

I was there in June of '75 with (name-drop time) Sam Adams (then the coach of UCSB) and Tom Jordan (now the meet director of Pre).

I'm raising my hand a number of times. The elevation at the SUU track is about 1,767 m (abt. 5,798 ft), not a bad altitude-training site.
