Re: OSLO DL-JTm: VASILEVSKIS, VESELÝ, PITKÄMÄKI & THORKILDSE

Easily the strongest javelin field we've seen so far this year... if you look at their past record Zaytsev is clearly the odd one out, but it's good to see new guys like him getting an opportunity or two to prove themselves This should be the point where Thorkildsen establishes himself as #1 again, but we'll see, we'll see; everyone here (except maybe for Zaytsev) is a potential winner.

European Athletics had a piece on Vasilevskis the other day... his first competition this year was mediocre, but apparently that was down to wariness about the condition of his recently operated left leg; his series at Pre was good and surely bodes well for this meet as well. True, with Vasilevskis you never know just what you're going to see, but I think this is more likely to be one of his good comps... anyway, when in shape he's more consistent than his reputation

De Zordo, last year's winner at Oslo, is still battling back problems but says he now feels ready to compete again. Pitkämäki says he's been trying to simplify his technique to better maintain his speed through the last few steps... let's hope it works.

Mannio seems to be in good solid shape, which might mean he's finally headed for a really good year; equally, it might mean he's mispeaking epically like a couple times in the past. You can probably guess I like one of those options rather more than the other

Avan had a very solid 2011 and seems to be essentially copying so far (maybe with a little improvement). He seems to respond to big meets well - he went 84.11, 83.79, 83.34, 84.79 in his four biggest meets (Euro U23, WUG, WC, Brussels DL) last year - so underestimate him at your peril. The only thing I dislike about him is a certain similarity with Tero Järvenpää (who keeps reminding me of a discus thrower who somehow ended up in the wrong event)... hopefully that doesn't mean he's equally injury-prone.
