  • How does Arkansas do it?

They used to rely on distance men and long and high jumpers, if I'm not mistaken. Now, for good measure, they have an entire team of stars. Pole vaulters, sprinters of every distance -- the whole nine yards. With 12.7 scholarships (or whatever it is now), how do they do it?

"Welcome to the Track Capitol of the World" reads the sign just outside of Fayetteville.

I believe success breeds success. John McDonnell has proven that if you want to win come to Arkansas.

Good runners gravitate there because they know they will perform there due to good coaching. This has also been the case at Stanford and Colorado for distance running in recent years.

The more important point at Arkansas for depth is corporate sponsors (Tyson, Wal Mart) give lots of "academic" and "need based" scholarships to Arkansas athletes so only 12.7 track scholarships is not that big of an issue. They have plenty of "walk ons" who are not paying for their own schooling.

The addition of Lance Baumann to the coaching staff has helped the Hogs immensely in the highly sprint rich SEC. Have you seen what the 4 x 1 and 4 x 4 has done since he got there? Obviously having a stud like Cragg doesn't hurt either.
