    Re: shot put world record

    >I looked at the womens list on the T&FN enews email (or whatever it is

I'm not saying drugs didn't play a part, but the fact is there just isn't much new talent in women's throwing events. You don't get too many young girls nowadays who want to be big and strong in the Natalya Lisovskaya sort of way (I stood next to her during the WCh in Paris and I was totally amazed at the size of that woman :-o). The rewards for being a world-class thrower aren't that great, either. I believe that, if these events attracted the sort of talent they did in 1970s/80s, drugs or not, we would at least be seeing 21 meter+ throws on a regular basis.

I totally agree wtih you there Powell. The strong woman image is frowned upon these days. Though notice how close the womans hammer is to the WR right now, but how far away the shot put is, gets one thinking.

        Re: shot put world record

Of course hammer specialists are close to the WR - the event has only been around at the major championship level since 1999, so, like PV, it's still in the development stage. Had the event been practiced seriously in the 1980s, who knows how much in excess of 80 meters the record would be...

In fact, I also believe the emergence of women's hammer is one of the reasons for the decline of other women's events. Not only are there few women willing to train the throws, but of those who do, a large proportion have been going into hammer throwing, believing it will be easier to break through to world class in a new event. The body type required to succeed in the hammer is similar to that in SP/DT, so there's a fair deal of substitution going on there.

I don't see anyone who could break that record now, neither my fellow countryman Martinez

            Powell/Bigmac-

Most female throwers are gliders. If you look at the marks by gliders, both men and women, since the drug crackdown of 1990 (not that nobody does drugs now), they are way down. In 1986 there were about 15 male gliders over 70'. In the last 10 years I can only think of 3 gliders that have thrown that far, and 2 failed drug tests.

I think it takes an absolutely freakish, 1 in a billion athlete to glide over 22m without drugs.

I'm not suggesting that nobody does drugs now but i think the sport is much cleaner than it was 15-20 years ago.

Cantwell freaks me out. I mean he had a reputed 575lb bench as a 19 year old. Thats more than Barnes himself could do at that age. He's beginning to worry me that he's getting a bit good a bit soon, if you get what I'm saying.

I disagree . Look how long it took to catch Toth.

Its a sad thing that when someone performs well, their performances are immediately questioned.

CC is a ridiculously big and powerful athlete. He's also significantly "weaker" since his famous 575 bench as a 19 year old.

Comparing Toth and Cantwell is like comparing apples and oranges.

1)Toth's college PR was 61', he increased that to 74'. Cantwell threw 71' in college.

2)Toth's MO was throwing bombs in april and then fading away at major championships, IF he even qualified. Cantwell has won 2 of the 3 major international championships that have taken place since he's turned pro.

As a shotputter myself I won't question his rise quick rise to the elite ranks, but the fact that he is throwing so far so young is going to cause suspicion about his "cleanliness". That is the way the sporting world opperates.

I'm honestly all for the great throwing that is taking place. Though if one more high profile thrower is banned in the coming season I figure it would be a death blow for throwing and cause suspicion over any thrower reaching 70 foot in shot, 65m in discus etc.
Truly sad that a few throwers give everybody else a bad reputation.
