Re: Donovan Bailey Invitational June 16th Edmonton

I mostly enjoyed Angela Whyte's resurgence in the 100H, finishing behind Lopes-Schliep but ahead of George, Holder and Felicien. Felicien seems out of it now and Holder and George have cooled off.
Interestingly, Phylicia George has "A" standard in both the 100 & 100H.

Let's not forget Rodhe over 20m again and beating Cantwell!

I want to publicly say the emergence of the Canadian circuit is a welcome development! It was a quality meet with quality races and good results. There is a lot to be said for the chance to compete without having to send my athletes half way around the world and fight jet lag and bad weather. Living on the west coast track is damn near non existent on the elite level. Edmonton and Vancouver would be welcomed options. Good job Canucks!

Do the upcoming trials in Canada work like in the U.S., or is there some sort of selection committee involved in addtion to trials?

Smoke agree with you 100%. Wish we could see the US side of things with say similar meets in Seattle, Portland and a couple in Cali over the late May, early June schedule.

Agree, perhaps his "training" with Bolt is more than he can handle with the late nights and all. I assume he is still in the Bolt camp but seriously wonder what is up. Last 3 years have seen him slide downhill.

Hi j-a-m, The trials basicly work the same as in the United States. If you have the Olympic standard performance marks it becomes essentially top 3 and it should be a definite that you are selected by Athletics Canada. There are other criteria that come in to play here with a category called rising star, standards and nomination commitee. Alot to go in to here but if you want the read, here are the links. The first link is the technical, the 2nd is actually where our athletes stand performance wise. Both from Athletics Canada site.

Thanks for the athlete tracking link-very helpful!

I will be at the nationals this year and am looking forward to them. Hope the unpredictable Calgary weather is decent.

Perdita posted that she thought there was a FS so let up ait-pissed off at herself for making that mistake. I would not rule her out as she has tons experience handling pressure. A big factor in a race like that.

Very pleased to see Angela Whyte back in the mix.

REALLY want Curtis Moss to make in the javelin.

I commented on the difficulty of making the Finals of the 100h at the US OTs. If Canada were part of the US, it would really, really be tough...

So do I but my question is: Does Athletics Canada regard Scott Russell's 84+ meter throw from July 2011 as a valid "A" standard or is the Canadian "window" limited to this season only?

Moss has beaten Russell at least twice this year and has two "B' standards while Russell has only one "B" so far this season. Curtis is also only 67 cm from the 82 meter "A" standard.

I don't think Blake will be seriously challenged for third place. Let's not forget that he ran 9.84 in Cayman in May.

Apparently AC does consider Russell's A as valid so Curits must throw an A at the Nationals.

That is a lot of pressure and the conditions alone could derail him. We thought he got the A here in Victoria-until the measurement came up. He thought he had it too.

Does Curtis Moss not fall under this scenario?

‘RISING STAR’ ? To be eligible, athletes must meet EACH of the following criteria:
                              ? achieve two “B” standards between April 1st – June 30th 2012**
? must not have been on a World Championship or Olympic Games team prior to 2011
? must finish among the top 3 at the 2012 Olympic Trials
? must have achieved within the 2012 qualifying period their applicable

If that is so, that is ok that Scott Russell's A from summer 2011 counts. IAAF rules do not allow a nation to enter 2 "B"'s by IAAF qualifying standards.

So at this point Russell needs a top 3 and an B, Moss an A and a top 3. The scenario can play out still that both can be selected. Both by meeting standards and top 3, and I think even if Russell say were to not throw the B, Moss could be selected alone on Rising Star.

I don't know. : ) Let's just hope both throw exceptionally in Calgary and leave all to be said on the field.
