  • Barcelona Long Jump6/16/12

I watched an hour of the Barcelona live stream today.. This meet did not have the advanced graphics of some and I could not understand the Spanish commentary but with fleeting scans of the clock and event performance boards figured most of it out although I had no idea who was competing.
Stream was unusual in that it showed a lot of ( I presume) the womens LJ finals.. usually you get the only the winning jump.
I have worked a lot of meets with a skeleton crew but not at meets of the level I presume this to be.
I could only identify four officials.. Board Judge( who also pulled and read the tape), Recorder ( I kinda like the desk gimmick), Pit Judge/Marker, Wind Gauge (who I am guessing also served as Timer. No obvious/apparent Flight Coordinator). There was one Raker and a Performance Board operator who, I assume by their attire were not "officials".

I have worked international meets but never outside the United State where we are mandated to have two Recorders and normally have dedicated Timer and Flight Coordinator. When measuring with tape, we customarily have a Tape Puller/Runway Official. The tape is read by the Second Recorder (who is in position as second eye on the board) and witnessed by the Board Judge.
They seemed to be getting the job done but my question:: Is this a normal complement of officials for a European LJ event?

At the NCAA Regional we had NINE officials at each PV pit, plus kids to put up the bar!
I usually have to do 8 of those jobs myself!

Yep, that is usually the case at most major US meets.. two years ago at Texas Relays we had 38 officials assigned to work two LJ runways... I guess they are overbooking like the airlines but when they all show up.. that is a lot of dedicated Marshals..

Only Spanish athletes were competing, though it was point-system competition (Catalonia won) some very good individual marks in the LJ- Luis Felipe Meliz 8.01, Eusebio Caseres Lopez 7.98. Women- Concepcion Montaner 6.57 ,Maria Del Mar Jover 6.57

Thanks, pakillo. I happened to see one of the 6.57s, no idea which..
The bibs apparently represented clubs or regions since many were identical..
I thought it curious that there were virtually no non-Caucasian athletes..???

The competition was the spanish championships by regions .One atlete for each spanish region in each event .The t-shirts are very similar in same cases
In the women long jump the winner María del Mar Jover was an invitated athlete ,she was trying the Helsinki (European Ch.)standard and she get it .She jumped 6.57
The stream was provided by spanish federation ,but only with two cameras .one to track ,another field .
The most of spanish athletes are caucasian athletes ,but in long jump there are two exceptions .Méliz the winner (PB 8.43) is a former cuban .He obtained the Spanish citizenship on 2007 ,and the third Okuto 7.72 (7.94 PB)is a galician (north west of iberian peninsula -my region ) but his fathers are ghanaian .
This is the track of Okuto village .In Kenya has better tracks .

              Back to my original question.
Are high level European LJ typically conducted with so few officials?

I cannot confirm that( though I often see so few officals) but I feel better (in terms of regularity) when I see more officials.

It´s no usual at this level ,but this competition is only in one day so there are a lot of fields events at same time .For instance ,long jump women, triple jump men ,high jump women and men ,SP men ,DT women and PV men ,all simultaneous .
