I had the same impression. She looks like the typical college age student, not especially athletic looking. But then again I've never heard of her running track before. She has a nice voice.

And does Al Joyner ever age?! He's 52!
This article dating back three years ago said that Mary was going to do track and field in college (also mentioning her signing a bit):

The article says she ran the Arcadia Invite as a freshman. It also says she was planning on running and jumping at Santa Monica College. Did she ever compete there?

Howie's "I know that last name" was surely scripted.

The audience cheered when Mary said "My mom is Flo-Jo", but I also have to wonder if that cheering sound was edited in. I didn't expect that many in the crowd to be old enough and have enough track & field knowledge to remember Flo-Jo.

Appearing on "America's Got Talent" is a career decision?
It certainly can be. Especially if the contestant gets far into the competition and/or gets noticed by a producer etc.

That said, she picked the better competition to enter, for her. I don't think her audition would have gotten her far if she had tried out for American Idol or the X-Factor. She was decent. Maybe even good. But not great. It is possible that better song choices will allow her to showcase her voice better, and perhaps she will get better accustomed to performing more in front of big audiences. Because AGT isn't a singing competition she won't be peer judged entirely against everyone that makes it to the finals, but some very good singers await her in the Las Vegas and following rounds.

    Good luck to her.

I cant say I am not disappointed. I kept hoping that she would one day appear on the scene, running like the wind and putting those awesome genes on display....

Not really, but if she had chosen track and field as a path, their would have been tremendous pressure on her to live up to expectations. Both of her parents and her aunt (Jackie Joyner Kersee) have a combined 7 Olympic gold medals and 5 world championship golds. Her uncle also coaches Allyson Felix and Dawn Harper. The media covering Track and Field would have put a lot of pressure on her to succeed based on who her family is. If she had chosen track and field, imagine someone like Ato Boldon asking the question "can Mary live up to her family legacy?" Might she have been able to handle the pressure? Maybe. But she would be considered a failure if she did not succeed in the sport big time. They would expect that she come away with multiple Olympic gold medals.

She wants to blaze her own path and if going on America's Got Talent is the way to do it, then so be it. This way the expectations are low. She comes in with low expectations (even though she did make it through the auditions). She has no previous family legacy in singing to live up to and she can create her own legacy if she succeeds.

Her Dad wasn't too shabby either.

She made the right decision because that is what she wants to do. But wouldn't we all love to know how those genes might have played out.

I wonder if Andre and Steffi's kids will also one day turn up on America''s Got Talent

Also even though I am definitely not an expert - flat out of tune - I agree with Mump Boy. The voice alone won't do it. She needs to pick better songs if she wants to progress.
    Why thank you

There's no point having a great voice if you don't know how to show it off

It's like being a great sprinter and competing in the 10k !!

It doesn't have a tune, a hook, any range or a 'moment'.

It's a talent show, there are rules, if you want to win you need all of the above, believe me i'm an expert
