    odelltrclan has got it right.
    The guys from Paris know for sure they have zero chance of winning at a fast pace. With a slow pace they know they will probably be there with 400 or so to go. If you have a dozen runners all bunched up anything can happen - favourites can trip and take out one or two others; or they can be boxed in. So the lesser athlete has a chance. It may be small but it is better than the zero chance with a fast pace. With a full on fast pace for the whole race it is unlikely an athlete will get tripped or boxed in.

      Be all that as it may, I was impressed by the Irish walkers and the Brazilian marathoners. Some honest effort there brought results that must have been a pleasant surprise.
