  • AOY - really tough now!

the olympics had so many amazing performances and stories from the olympics it makes it so difficult to pick an athlete of the year!

Who do you think will win for the men? It would be soooo difficult to pick between Bolt, Rudisha and the Mo-Bot! then theres ashton eaton aswell! any one of those four would be a sure fire favourite in any other year!

as for the women, it would be really close between Jess Ennis and Allyson Felix, both of whom by the way have the two most dazzling smiles in athletics!

WR AND Oly Gold - unbeatable: Rudisha it is! Eaton second; Bolt (did the same thing 3 times) 3rd.

      My 2 cents:

      1) Rudisha. Gold medal+WR+4 of the 5 top performances in the world this year. That is a very tough combination to beat.
      2) Eaton. Gold medal + WR + the two best performances in the world.
      3) Bolt and Farah. Double golds but no WR in individual events.

        Mo Farah

5000/10,000 double is pretty difficult, and he has not had a lot of losses on the circuit either.

Add Merritt into that list and you have your top four candidates. Farah a clear fifth, although voters love to go with distance guys, which may move him up.

Biggest thing working against Eaton is that he has no post-Olympic Diamond League to put up more great performances. (Might compete in a few individual events, but would likely not win them against top fields.)

That's because he'd hardly run on the circuit.

Re: AOY - really tough now!

Eaton has the WR in the decathlon and olympic title. That will count a lot. Bolt so far has no WR's. Rudisha is the fly in the ointment for Eaton. Eaton's season is done, but Bolt and Rudisha's are not. WR's by them could seal the deal against Eaton. Rudisha with 2 WR's in a year would be hard to beat, but he has had the AOY title 2x now and I suspect the American voters especially will look to their own guy.

Are we talking Track and Field News AOY??
Or just AOY.....without T&FN criteria or biases??
If T&FN....using their criteria where marks get LEAST consideration....then here's what I believe THEY will choose:

                  Men

                  1. Ashton Eaton......WR, AR......won biggest meet of year.....had best-2 Dec total points ever (17,908), also had one of best LJ's of the year.

                  2. David Rudisha.....WR, OG Gold, several sub-1:42's, dominated his event.

                  3. Mo Farah......barely beats Bolt....because of two Gold's....and though NOT among T&FN criteria, his being a Brit and doing what he did in London will give him a slight edge.

                  4. Usain Bolt.....3 Golds......one WR (or 0.25 of a WR).....won most of his races.

                  5. Aries Merritt........4 or 5 times in a row at 12.92 to 12.94......Gold medal.
                  6. Renee Lavillenie.......Gold, great series of marks.
                  7. Christian Taylor.......Gold, # 1 or 2 in two events.
                  8. Ivan Ukhov......won the OG, had some great marks.
                  9. Yohan Blake.......1 Gold, 2 Silvers, some great marks.....and beat Bolt (at least once!!).
                  10. Karani James.......Gold, first sub-44 in a few years......and undefeated (??).

                  Women

                  1. Jessica Ennis.......a HUGE win and HUGE star power at her home Olympics, not to mention a great mark.

                  2. Allyson Felix........WR (or one-fourth of one), 3 Golds, first sub-22 in a few years.

                  3. Sally Pearson.......Gold, fastest times of year, undefeated.

                  4. Tirinish Dibaba......One Gold, one Silver, fast time in the 10K.

                  5. Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce......2 Golds, won feature event in a loaded field.
                  6. Sanya Richards-Ross......Two Golds, was dominant in the 400, plus good in the 200.
                  7. Valerie Adams.........Won Gold (!!!! ), great marks, undefeated against CLEAN competition!!
                  8. Carmelita Jeter.......A Silver....and part of the phenomenal 4X100 R World record.
                  9. Anna Chicherova.....Gold.......some great marks.
                  10. Barbora Spotakova........Barely beats out Brittney Reese and Jenn Suhr and Natalya Antyukh.

Rudisha's also unbeaten (thus far) this year, something that can't be said about Bolt and isn't really relavant for decathletes or Farah (since he's raced so little). If Aries Merritt sets a WR before the end of the season (and suffers not further losses) he could challenge for the AOY, but I agree that as things currently stand it's a slam-dunk for Rudisha.

One thing that GH has drilled into my head more than once is that the criteria for world rankings, which is what you're referring to, aren't necessarily the criteria for AOY voting. The voting panel has a lot more leeway.
There are only a few requirements
                      - you have to remain consistent with world rankings, which are provided (in part) to the voting panel
                      - you can't fall too far outside the norm of the rest of the panel
                      - you have to be able to defend potentially questionable votes

Robert Harting is undefeated all year, also won the Euro Champs and has had two comps over 70m.

Taylor has lost twice outdoors. He also lost all 3 indoor comps, including World Indoors (I can't recall if indoors counts to TFN Rankings).

Lavillenie has lost once outdoors and once indoor. Did win EC also, with quality winning marks in both champs (5.97 each time), plus WIC at 5.95

Ukhov has lost once outdoors, and 4 times indoor (including 3rd at WIC).

If Harting stays undefeated, I'd rank him highest of the "fieldies" (ignoring Eaton as a hybrid). Knowing TFN, that's unlikely to get him above the top 5 without some of them copping regular defeats (most likely to be for Merritt (as he races more often) who has already lost two races, although one was in 12.96w!)

I'd be surprised to see Ennis win. Kluft never got higher than 3rd (in 2003 when she first broke 7000) and was only 5th when she went 7032 in 2007. Perhaps the back up Gotzsis mark will make a difference

Apologies for errors in athletes win-loss record!!
I was doing it off the top of my head....so probably THOUGHT so and so was undefeated!!
I don't pay as much attention to win-loss records as i do to marks.
                              Just my own preference.
So thanks for all the corrections!!

As for SAFP, I goofed BIG TIME there.
You're right, she got just one Gold.
(I mistakenly gave her a Gold for the 4X100R.....but that was a Silver!!!) ops:
