    Longisowa 5.31,1 with 800m remaining. Bekele's 7.25,79 shouldn't be challenged. 6.34 with a lap remaining.

Looks like #6 all-time US, or #9 if you include 2M conversions.

I've found that the average slowdown between one's flat 3K and their SC times is between 20 and 30 seconds:
                  Here's some examples:

                  Kiptanui.......7:27.18--7:56.16........28.98
                  Shaheen......7:34.67--7:53.63.........18.96
                  PK Koech.....7:33.93--7:54.31.........20.38
                  Barmasai....7:36.40--7:55.72..........19.32
                  B Kipketer...7:33.96--7:59.08..........25.12
                  Boulami.....7:38.18--7:55.28..........17.10
                  Tahri........7:33.18--8:01.18..........28.00

                  Jager's numbers are now:

                  7:35.16--8:06.81...........31.65!!

                  Moral??

His SC time has room for improvement!!

Good point...I think Jager will break 8:00 sometime in the next year or two...will be fun to see what he does.

I would be interested to see body size and weight next to those numbers as well (for each). I wonder what kind of impact it has. A bigger person has to expend more energy going over the barriers and so it may not be totally accurate to impute the faster times. Plus, no one knows what potential the athlete has (how serious was the athlete in the 3000 attempt and what fitness level were they at.

I believe he is capable certainly and hope he does break 8:00.

                        Re: Stockholm DL—m3000:

But the barriers are relatively lower for the taller athlete if they are supple enough to take advantage.

Jager's form is very good for a novice but he likely will improve several seconds just off form alone. Add to that the fact that he has only been in one fast race and I think that he will lower the AR twice next year but it will take racing in Europe to do so. He may race some 5000s in the US to be pushed by the 'locals'.

myself, i think that probably the 7:35 is equivalent to his steeple, like others say, jager is less taxed going over the hurdles due to his height and natural efficiency.

As with averages, there are highs. And there are lows. On the lower spectrum, Mustafa Mohamed, who was not shy on flat 3.000m races, ran the steeple only six seconds slower than his best over 3.000m (8.05,75 to 7.59,34). Jager may be the exception on the high end. Maybe not.

I understand your optimism. And I wish him well.

EPelle - Mustafa did have a 7:54:05 indoors in 2009 behind Koech(running a 3kSC best of 8:18:44 outdoors that season) so the low for him might not quite be so low but your point is well made.

Mustafa must be the slowest sub 8:10 steeplechaser ever ....as EPelle points out, he was not shy about running on the flat (often in fast races) but he never looked faster than 3:44, 7:54, 13:30.

It's not as if Mustafa's 8:05:75 PB was achieved down the field in the DL, it was achieved by him winning against a very good field!

Re Evan Jager, he is improving on the flat, his technique at the barriers gets better with each race and I would be very surprised if he does not go sub-8 in the right race by the end of next season barring injuries.

I think Evan will go through a further extended period of running fast and finishing 3 or 4 behind the Kenyans and it will be really interesting to see if he can break the Kenyan stranglehold over the next few years.
