  • Definition of "all comers meet"

In the Olympic session notes TFN published there were references to "UK all comers record". Can someone define what "all comers" encompasses?

When I hear "all comers" I think of low key summer meets at the local college or municipal track where anyone HS/college/open can show up, pay a couple dollars per event, and run a race or two. Heats organized by self-reported times, and always ending with the "everyone participates including the shot putters, teams chosen right before the start mile relay". Often beer involved in post-meet festivities. Good times from summers past.

Clearly though if the Olys are an all comers meet, there is a different, more rigorous definition. Is it just to distinguish from a HS or collegiate only meet? Do DL meets count? Just curious re the term, and appreciate any clarification anyone can share, thx.

It means "best mark ever by anyone in that event on UK soil" whether that person was a Brit, Kenyan, Aussie, etc.

It's a concept that goes back to the dawn of the sport. I believe most nations maintain official lists of such marks. Here's USaTF's (which has, for example, Bolt as the 100 record holder):

Interesting list but why is the Men's list incomplete? No SP or 4x4.

Not up to date either. There has been a few sub 13 5ks in Eugene, starting in 2010.

Maybe there should be a sub-listing for wind-aided marks and other questionable marks. I bet there is some interest in what was the best ever on US soil under _any_ condition.

This discussion is about 'all comers' MARKS. The thread title says (erroneously) "all comers MEET".

An all comers meet is one that anyone can enter, i.e., no affiliation or qualifying necessary.

That probably led to the discussion.

Thx DrJay and Mr. Hill for the explanations, most helpful. And to Marlow and ATK, you hit on the root of my question and why I was confused - as the Olys don't look like what we think of as an all comers meet. Today I have learned that an all comers record can in fact occur in something other than an all comers meet.

Though looking at that USATF link, I am amused picturing Bolt or Bekele walking up to the local JC on a Wednesday night in the summer, spikes over his shoulder..."hey, I'm here for the all comers meet, what time is the 200 (or 5000)?" Thx all for the clarifications.

Hey, you joke, but the all comer meets in the Eugene 30 or so years ago, were just like that. Mary D. set her WR 5k in an all comer meet.

That is awesome. I've read some of the stories, but that must have been an amazing atmosphere to be part of in person!
