  • Some notes on the U.S. 2013 domestic schedule

I know the 2012 season is still in full swing, but a few notes after looking at some teams' schedules:

    1. Stanford Invite and Texas Relays are both the last week of March. Pity that they'll go head-to-head, although with teams increasingly sending different event groups to different meets, they probably won't cannibalize each other much.

    2. The Big 12 Champs (Waco) are the week after Penn/Drake. Baylor, for one, will skip Drake. Not sure how this will affect other Big 12 teams' participation in the relay carnivals.

    3. Pre will be the Saturday before NCAAs in Eugene, making for a fun week for those able/willing to stay for both.

    4. Payton Jordan will be Sunday, April 28 (the day after Penn/Drake conclude, as the past few years).

    5. The adidas GP Diamond League meet will be the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend (one week before Pre, instead of the week after, as in the last few years), so there'll be an even longer gap between the last "big" domestic meet and USATF Champs.

Any info on Mt. SAC and Oxy?

      Interesting. The obvious question is:
What is USATF doing to coordinate a schedule of meets for our post-collegiate elites (let's say, the top-tier of 16 or so)? Or . . . should they even be in that business? I think they should. The 'infrastructure' that they SHOULD be providing our 'Olympic Development' types SHOULD include a collaborative effort by the disparate meet directors to look out for the welfare of their 'product'.

which leads to the largest question of all: when/where are the Nationals?!

From Brian Yokoyama of Mt. SAC: "18, 19 and 20th of April".

No idea about Oxy. If it's the same weekend as this year, it'd be just a week before New York, but it would allow some collegians to compete, as quite a few top ones did this year. If it's the week before, it'd be the same weekend as Pac-12s (hosted by USC).

I could see there being a need for a meet on the June 8 weekend, but that'd be a few weeks after Oxy's spring semester. I have no idea how much they rely on general university/athletic department staff to put on the meet.

I've been told by someone who should know that Des Moines will (has to?) host the 2014 USATF Champs as well.

                from USATF's schedule page

                <<2013 National Championships
                and International Team Qualifying events

Mar. 3 USA 50 km Championships
Mar. 22-24 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships
Jun. 25-30 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships
Jul. 22-28 USATF National Junior Olympic Outdoor Track & Field Championships
Dec. 14 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships>>

Last I heard, no formal deal had yet been struck. I could be wrong.

I wonder if some of Canada's National Track League Meets will try and fill in the "gap", between Pre and Nationals. The Jerome, Victoria, and Edmonton Meets could fit quite nicely in there, for the athletes who don't want to go back and forth to Europe before Nationals.

Is it official that there'll be NCAA Prelims once again, with the locations Austin and Greensboro?

Don't exactly recall where I got it, but my 2013 calendar shows Des Moines for June 19-23. Possibly Des Moines Register. Still, the lack of an official announcement is interesting.

T&FN is certainly advertising tours to Des Moines like it's a done deal.
