The Kaliese Spencer DQ

The title is slightly misleading.
Spencer was DQ'ed, but then, after a protest, was reinstated as the winner of the Birmingham 400H for women.
My question is: Why was she initially DQ'ed??

I heard she had "run around" a hurdle!!
Does that mean she ran out of her lane??
And if so, why was she reinstated??

Anyway, just curious.

That probably means she cleared one or more hurdles with one leg over the hurdle and one leg beside the hurdle (below the horizontal plane of the hurdle).
That is not rare in the 400m hurdles and often judges don't do anything and I think some runners use that "technique" often. If she did that I really don't know why she was reinstated!

They say her trailing leg went around the hurdle instead of over it....

I looked at the tape, and I can't see it. I think that's why she was reinstated....

The initial DQ was supposedly caused by her trailing leg going around a hurdle, not over it. As pakillo says, below the horizontal plane of the hurdle. The rules says that the entire body must pass above it.

Bruce James (who is also IAAF certified) of MVP was in attendance and lodged a protest. A review of the video showed no evidence that she had violated the rules, hence her reinstatement.

Having personally made that call (@ the USOT & in the 400mH Finals) and having the protest attempt dismissed after a video review, you had better have irrefutable evidence of that happening over more than 1 hurdle, or do not even turn the card in to the Chief Umpire or Referee.

Hmm. What video is used for the review? Do the officials have all existing video angles (that have been captured) at their disposal? If it's only the top of the stadium video, I can understand how it may be difficult to determine a trail-leg issue from that angle alone.

And are you saying that if you have irrefutable evidence (i.e., clear video angle) of just 1 hurdle infraction, the officials won't DQ?

Depends upon the meet, the referee & the jury of appeals. In Eugene, they used the 360 degree Eagle Eye setup to verify the calls in 08. The only question I got was "how did I see it". I said "because I'm that damn good".

MJR can you please explain to me how Angelo was not dq'd after knocking over Batman's hurdle? I understand where there is no interference and the leg was above the hurdle (happens a lot in the 4 hurdles) but when someone elses hurdle is hit I am confused as to how it did not result in a dq

I wasn't there. John Chaplin was the Referee, as Men's T&F Chair, so that might be reason enough for stupidity to occur. My reference was to '08.
