  • New Stanford Coach From Gtown

    from home-page-linked article:

Chris Miltenberg has been named Stanford's Director of Track & Field and head cross-country coach. Miltenberg comes from Georgetown where he was the associate head coach for track and field and the head women's cross-country coach. He led the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA title in women's cross country and was named the USTFCCCA National Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
All the best to this Hoya!

I hope the recruits knew about this. If they didn't, that's pretty rotten.

It's a particularly unfortunate situation given the number of kids who I imagine considered both schools. However, let's not blame a guy for making a logical career choice.

Given the benefits of a Stanford degree (to say nothing of the setting under which you'll spend 4 years in school), I've got to guess it's one of the few schools where when the coach leaves, the overall reaction of a recruit is, "Whew, I got in just in time."

What part is rotten? That G-town is now in need of a distance coach or that Stanford hasn't had one until now? You mean the kids that are freshmen this year at G-town? Or Stanford? When exactly do you hope they found out? Last spring maybe, before Edrick knew he was leaving Stanford? How exactly do you think this business works? Please explain what is rotten and who is to blame. You sign an NLI with an institution, not a coach.

If you are referring to next year's recruits, they don't sign until February.

...amd that's part of the problem: that "student-athletes" sign NLI's with the schools that make their contract binding but noone elses. If the NCAA has no problem telling every football player at PSU that they can transfer anywhere immediately, then all athletes should have that opportunity every time there is any coaching change. (Ideally, athletes should have no more requirement than a semester notice to transfer anywhere, if it were up to me; luckily for NCAA schools, it isn't)

Still waiting for clarification for Steve Solomon from Oz.

It says he's going to Medical School. In Australia he would have been as they go straight after High School, but in the US? What happens there? He is not going to do a 4 year undergrad.

Will a change of coaches trigger a review of his options?

I tell recruits I am recruiting to make sure you like the school and the team, because those are the givens at a University. Although I have no current plans to leave, it is always an option. I could get fired, or the University of Awesome might call me up and offer me Millions of dollars...But the athletes will not leave, and the school will still be there.

Yes a Coach is important, but in our Sport questions like, Do they have the right major, Are there athletes there that can push me and help me develop, Are there facilities that meet my needs, and Does the cafeteria have edible food, should be ranked above coaching.
