  • NCAA regionals - notable absences

I've put together a list listed those athletes who are ranked in the top 24 in the NCAA descending order lists but who are not listed as competing in those events in the NCAA regionals.

The list may or may not be particularly accurate, and the top 24 was just an arbitrary cutoff point.

In a lot of cases athletes were highly ranked in multiple events and chose to focus on certain ones, which explains some of the absences shown.

Others may be injured or unable to compete for various other reasons. I've listed the non-competitors by region and event. The listings include their rank on the descending order list, their school, and their mark.

Re: NCAA regionals - notable absences

Great update, thanks! (for saving us the work!)

Yes, there are people in there we have listed on the NCAA Championships Formcharts we posted yesterday. Rather than worrying about tweaking those now, on the eve of the Regionals, we'll just do an update after the Regionals results have given us the potential fields.

It seems that quite a few of these athletes have decided not to double. Lauryn Williams, Wes Felix, Allison Beckford, Lashinda Demus and Monique Henderson spring readily to mind.

Re: NCAA regionals - notable absences

Yes, but also some people like (just off a quick scan) Mulabegovic in the mSP and Manuel in the wPV who would have been real players in a single event.

Stacie Manuel has a stress fracture and is currently on crutches (did not compete at the SEC meet)

alot of athletes are starting to focus on olympic trials/taking away nothing from ncaa, but the college kids hear about the big buck$$ rewards from all the open athletes&the excitement of the games.alot more in the west.

Add Ychlindria Spears of Texas (triple jump) to that. Bone stress injury. She's never quite lived up to the potential she showed in high school, but if she ever does, she should be a title contender. Texas' SID told me she might enter, but I guess the injury still hasn't cleared up.

Re: NCAA regionals - notable absences

I didn't include Ryan Hall because he declared for the West Regional. I didn't add the others mentioned (except for Stacy Manuel in the PV) because they weren't in the top 24 in the country in their events.

And my original post explained that I decided not to include relays. My focus was on individual athletes, not team events.

How did a 14.54 seasonal 5K best make it to the West Regionals? Misprint?

All conference winners qualify for regionals. The kid from Southern Utah won the Mid-Continent 5000.
