When Garry Hill started the thread entitled "USATF Release On Home Depot", it prompted some posters to launch into an anti-TV rant, which led me to post the following:
"Garry's post reminds me of the magazine's attempt a number of years ago to provide regular reviews of TV coverage. I believe it was Sieg Lindstrom who wrote the first column--it basically ripped whatever network it was that was going to be doing the bulk of the shows that season--and this was BEFORE the first show ever aired!" (On re-reading Garry’s post, it was obvious that he didn’t start the anti-TV theme)
Sieg read way more into my post than was intended. I certainly didn't mean to imply that he had written a REVIEW before he had seen any shows, but I did recall that T&FN had written what I had preceived at the time to be unfair criticism of the impending TV coverage of the 1995 indoor season.
Sieg denied that he had written such an article, and, after looking back at the 1995 issues, he discovered that Jeff Hollobaugh had written a straightfroward preview of the series, while he (Sieg) had written a complimentary review of the first three shows in the January issue. After reading those stories myself, it was looking like my memory had failed me again, but then I noticed in Sieg’s review a reference to other commenary in Track Newsletter.
Aha! There was the “offending” piece on page 7 of TN--Volume 41, No.2, January 25, 1995. Titled “TV Series Not The Answer?”, the editors ran in full a lengthy letter from a disgruntled reader who ripped USATF and all U.S. networks for past broadcasting sins. I’m pretty sure I wrote a “Letter to the Editor” at the time that called into question the fairness of printing such criticism before the first show of the new series ever made air!
So, Sieg, it looks like we were both right, but I do apologize for bringing your name into the discussion. I'll buy the first round in Sacto!
