The '84 OG 3000. Slaney clipped her heel (Mary only had tactical experience in European and big meets, didn't know how to run in a crowd.) Mary went down and spent the next week whining about it. Give her this, Mary had a fine whine. Budd soldiered on, to the massive boos of the crowd. In post race interviews, Budd was gracious and "nice". I had thought her a bit of a carpetbagger, but I became a fan after that. -

her Olympic race occured on my birthday. The ice cream vendor gave me a freebie when my friends in the stands sang happy birthday to me. Womens HJ had Rosemarie Ackermann winning, 2nd gold- first came in '76 I believe...Sara Simeoni in 2nd and Joni Huntley in 3rd...but back to Zola--with a name like that, instant identification. Ran barefoot in races regularly. And who did she marry? Someone to get her British citizenship? Somebody "famous"? Anyway, happy birthday Zola!Comment
