  • Gabe Jennings is back

Walt Murphy is reporting that he(Gabe not Walt) is running at the Payton Jordan U.S. Open on Memorial Day. He isn't on the entry list yet that I can see but that list is here:

Oh, for the dream match race of the ages: AW vs. Gabe.

        Re: Gabe Jennings

you seemed to have already missed the dream match up of all time....it was held on Fox Sports TV last year.....a 4 man midget relay versus the camel.....the camel won.

A close second in dream match ups was the USA Decathlete (forget his name now) in a long jump competition (into water) versus a black labrador retreiver.....the dog won....this wonderful event was also part of that Fox program.

Who says track & field gets no respect or TV coverage?

He'll be back when we see a 3:38 or faster. Until then he's a question mark. And two or three consecutive 3:forty-somethings would drop him from even the question mark category as far as being considered a serious July Trials contendor.

By the way, thinking of other athletes in something of the same position as Gabe is in right now-
Who took a longer sabbatical- Gabe, or Jim Ryun in the late 60's?
As I recall there were the same kind of questions about Ryun's fitness and motivation (or lack of; burnout was a term often used) at the time.

Similar questions about Muhammed Ali when he returned to boxing.

Of course Ryun and Ali were at a MUCH higher pinnacle of their respective sports when they started their sabbatical than Gabe has ever achieved.
