of course, if the fates are kinder, he doesn't break his ankle in the Montréal warmups and grabs a lesser medal, and four years later doesn't get boycotted out of Moscow and adds another medal (probably gold) at that one. Amazing how that would change his legacy.
(of course, if we're indulging in fantasy, if he were the Moscow winner, perhaps at that point he retires, or backs off on his career, because the era of the World Champs keeping careers alive is still a few years away and not on anybody's radar)
