  • Ulm Multievents 22/23 May - Schrader/Niklaus/Gambetta

The German multi events meeting in Ulm takes place over the next two days and has somewhat of a 'combeack' theme to it.

Michael Schrader, winner of Gotzis in 2009 ahead of the then soon to be World Champion Hardee, will be looking to finish his first decathlon for two and a half years. He has had persistent foot problems since his 2009 win which saw him miss all the majors since. His primary aim is to finish the event in one piece. (he started the decathlon in Gotziz last season but NH in the PV because of his foot and ankle)

20 yr old Matthias Brugger, last years winner in 7942, was selected for the Europeans based on that performance but DNF because of knee problems. He is aiming to qualify for U23 qualifying.

Andre Niklaus has himself suffered with numerous injuries since 2008 and as again like Schrader just wants to finish.

Others in the dectahlon are Simon Hechler and Matthias Prey.

In the heptathlon Sara Gambetta continues her comeback. She pushed Schippers all the way to U20 title in 2011 and while Schippers has excelled Gambetta went backwards with injuries. She tore a ligament last year and still hasnt found any sort of running or jumping form yet but her throws are good.

Tilia Udelhoven and Alina Biesenbach also start.

Unfortunately there are no live results or even a website dedicated to the meeting. It's a shame because it's one of three qualification competitions for the german moscow team.

Michael Schrader started very impressive, 10,52s over 100m, +1,7 m/s wind.

7.82m for Schrader in the long jump, 1985 points for him after two events, only 30 p below his best decathlon.

That's a great start for him a new PB! (previous best was 10.64)

The LJ is also excellent (PB of 8.05). I really hope he can finish the competition and put up a good score. His HJ and PV are going to be interesting as his HJ is average, as with most German decathletes, and his PV is where he had problems last year in Gotzis. But he obviously has base fitness and speed.

What is it with Germany and the decathlon/heptathlon? The only other country that is nearly as obsessed with the multis would have to be NED. But for all the attention that the multis get in Germany there have been only two medals (Meier and Buseman) in the last 20 years on the men's side (two 4th places, too) and only 5 (Braun, Oeser and Schwartzkopf) on the women's side. It seems as if they should have more medals or at least less emphasis. What gives?

No idea how it started, but there is a long tradition. One reason for the lack of medals (Busemann won two by the way, so its 3 total) is injuries. In my opinion, talentwise Busemann was on the same level as Eaton and would have been the first man over 9000 points, but his body couldn't cope with his talent. Same goes for Schrader, immense talent, but one injury after another.
Personally i fell in love with decathlon 30 years ago watching Daley Thompson duking it out with Hingsen, Wentz and Kretschmer.

Thanks! It just seems that some of those athletes may have been better off as one-eventers rather than multi-eventers.

Baton less relay, silly comment re medals. In those 20 years which nation has been more successful? Overall only the USA. In the 16 global championships in the last 20 years there were 48 medals up for grabs in each discipline. So the women have won just over 10% of the medals. That may not seem like much but in a multi event, where the risk of DNF and injury is much greater than other events, I think that's pretty good going. They did have a lean patch in the early 00s but their women have medaled in the last 3 globals (as well as the euros in 2010) also while of course it's all about the majors, the multis are a little like marathon running in that their is Kudos in winning at Gotzis and (less so) Talence, their equivalent if the big road races.

They have a great batch of decathletes now in particular so let's see if they start medal ling again on the men's side
