  • Ehsan Hadadi: “I will no longer compete for Iran!”

As linked on the front page.

He is training, essentially alone, in the US. Fed up with his Fed not providing what they promised. Intends to return to Iran, as it is his country.

Athletes with "no country" have competed under the Olympic flag before. I'm not saying this is similar to those examples, but if he does not represent his native Iran, are we to assume he won't be in this year's WC's?

He talks about competing in the DLs, and no mention of the WCs. Lucky he is not in that other heavy throw...

Ehsan Hadadi will not compete at the World Championships until the situation with his Athletic Federation is resolved.

You will be able to read more about it in an upcoming interview what we conducted with him.

            Excellent point.
I doubt he would. From what I know of the situation he has great loyalty for Persia, and sees his countrymen separate from the Iranian Federation.

I believe the only athletes allowed into the Olympics under the "no country" rule are those for whom its because of a lack of membership in the IOC by the nation. In other words, if your nation is in the meet, the only way you can be there is representing them. No freelancing.

I wonder if Delano Williams knows of this? I had forgotten about it myself. Thanks for the reminder gh.

And there were four such athletes last year, two of them in track and field, although I have no idea why three of the athletes chose not to represent The Netherlands at the Olympics. And the runner from South Sudan now has American citizenship and now eligible to compete for the United States if he chooses to.

I'd thought there was one athletics competitor, a 400m sprinter. At any rate, weren't the athletes who declined to compete for The Netherlands citizens of the now dissolved (2010) Netherlands Antilles?

I announced at least two. And yes, one of them had a Dutch option, I believe, but didn't take it.
