This is an item that normally would not rise to the level of interest on this board. However, I have had the opportunity on several occasions to meet and talk with Gary and with others at Minnesota (supposedly Wisconsin's biggest rival). There is a link on the home page to his being induced into the Minnesota Hall of Fame.
Gary is one of the people in track and field/cross country the sits in the first rank of those that I have had the privileged to know. He is a good coach and an even better human being. He has retired after very many years. It is my impression that he is almost universally loved and appreciated by those who have been in his charge over the years. While many coaches are noted for this 'characteristic' I think that the truth is a little more mixed with the hits and misses. I have only seen hits from all levels of athlete.
I salute the Minnesota Hall of Fame for recognizing the value of one of there own and not waiting five years to enshrine him into the HOF.
