On the mens side at least half the Qs were from the Texas/AZ/OK locales.
This reminds me of last years' East regional in Jacksonville which had relatively mild weather (cool and dry) to the chagrin of some of the runners from the South who wanted to see the runners from up North suffer. LSU's Laura Carleton just missed qualifying in the 5000, finishing 13th, and I remember thinking that if only it were a few degrees warmer, she would have moved up a spot and punched her ticket to nationals.

      Any others?
Yes, Simpson of KU, the #2 overall seed failed to advance to the WLJ final. This will cost KU 7 points (Geubelle moves up one slot) on the formchart while OR loses a projected 6 with Hasay's failure to advance. The upshot is that A&M sneaks into the women's driver's seat, with KU and OR tied and just three points back.

5 of the 12 qualifiers in the womens 10000 ran at iowa state, tuliamuk- bolton transferred to wichita state 2 years ago for their nursing program, and semehar tesfaye ran for iowa state for 3 years, and got her bachelors in 3 years taking 28 units one semester all A's, this year she transferred to arkansas for her masters which she has completed in 1 year.

One of Hasay's high school Footlocker losses was attributed to the heat as well. She has challenges competing long distances (over 1.500m) in the heat.

            What's the old saying?
If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen!

Remember, the same exact heat "challenged" the other 47 runners in her race!
Don't know, but were any of the other's performances adversely affected by the heat?
Not just running slower.....as everyone did!!.....but running below expectations, with the main reason being the heat?

This race by Hasay affects the entire outcome of the NCAA's.
Though I doubt this will stop her from running the 10K at USATF, she may have to do some homework about her ability to compete well in ALL types of weather!

            I'm rooting for her!!
            Go Jordan!!

I'm especially excited about Young's 9.99 with little wind. Really enjoyed watching him at Drake Relays last couple years, NCAA's last year and then seeing him make the Olympic team in the 200! Here's hoping he stay's healthy-the US needs a star in the 200 for sure. Kinda lacking currently!

I agree regarding the 200m lacking, in the US, Spearman seems to be struggling (although can never be discounted) then there's Gay, then there are just a host of young athletes with waiting to break out.

But great to see Young really following up on his Olympic berth last year with a great outdoor campaign so far.

The Regionals giveth & the Regionals taketh away. Seed times -- even if they are fast enough to be on the collegiate all-time list -- turned out to be not much more than a good indicator of who might advance. Hasay obviously had a bad day -- the most dramatic example in this event -- but 5 of the top 10 seeded runners (including Hasay) did not advance to nationals. Of the successful runners who replaced these 5 in the overall 12 Q, most were not far below the top 12 in terms of seed time (e.g., seeded 13-18). The most dramatic "improvement against seed time" was Dani Stack, who was seeded 34th, and who was the only 1 among the top 12 who outperformed her seed time.

That's the way it goes. I'm a Hasay fan, and certainly hoped she would be running the 10k at nationals, but now I'll hope she makes it through in the 5k.

By contrast, the West regional men's 10k corresponded almost entirely to the seed list (not in order, of course): 11 of the top 12 seeds advance to nationals, with the only one not advancing being relatively low #10 seed (David Perry), replaced by the "over-performing against seed time" Matthew Melancon, seeded #24, finishing 12th.
