  • Why doesn't Eugene have an indoor track?

Eugene OR, the "Track Capital of the World"!
    True!
    But something's missing.
An indoor track...and indoor track MEETS.....on the west coast!

We used to have them....in LA and SF.
The only semblance of indoor track (or A track) on the west coast now is the OT in Seattle!

Why doesn't Nike invest a few million....or whatever it costs.....pocket change for them!!!.....and build an indoor track facility in Eugene??

Betcha it wouldn't take them long to sign up the World Indoor, the USATF indoor, and the NCAA indoor.....plus other meets.....for Eugene!!

    Just an idea, Phil!! :P

Just throwing it out there, GH.
The money is still in Mr Knight's wallet, I believe!!
Seriously, do you know if that idea has ever been considered by Nike.....or anyone??

Well, the Pac-8/10/12 did not do a lot of indoor track because they do not have the same winter as the Midwest/NE and do not need it so much for a training venue. With indoor track diminishing everywhere but with schools, there is not as much of a circuit to support what is there now.

My suggestion was along the the lines of....
"If you build it, they will come!".

Better weather notwithstanding, why shouldn't the west coast.....with Eugene the center of it, as it is with outdoor track!!.....have their own indoor track season?
Even if most of the meets involved just west coast and mountain state teams, it would be worth it.
And not only college teams, but high schools too!
And they could CREATE a NEW meet....or 2 or 3.....that I'm sure would be an instant success...along the lines of Boston and Millrose!
And as I said, I'm pretty sure the championship indoor meets would surely be attracted to Eugene's new venue.....
if there WERE such a venue!

Lest one forget, those little green and yellow duckies up in the Northwest are predominantly distance-oriented. In one season, on to another, and then to outdoors. A vicious cycle. They start contesting their "B" and "C" athletes in some of those meets to get them experience and to rest their "A" team, and the fans rant about the quality of those meets. For it's not just the U of O which would require resting its best for the real meets that count. Essentially, these meets would turn out to be all-comers. And, it is about the weather as much as it is about the overhead costs involved in the upkeep and maintenance of the all-comer's venues for all but what, two- or three-meets per year. Not such a smart idea.

I've heard rumors that Oregon was thinking about building one.

having an indoor facility as part of the new West Grandstand is part of the "master plan" (or master wish list, at least)

It's been in the planning stage for a long time. Years ago (can't remember how many, but at least 3-4), there were actual architectural plans online (via the firm's website).

Not sure of the publication date of this story, but it provides a bit of info on how things stand:

You don't need an indoor facility to be competitive in the indoor season. Why spend money for the sake of spending money unless it's being built into an indoor football facility or something?

                        Great article!!
They must be psychic ....because they speak of the exact same thing I did.....that Eugene would probably get the big championship meets with such a facility!
                        To my mind, it's a win-win situation!!

schools from winter-weather states can be somewhat competitive indoors without an indoor facility in distance running, but if you've got nowhere good for sprinting/hurdling/jumping/throwing, you're SOL.

This indoor facility could be modeled after The Armory....at least for its purposes.
                            Isn't The Armory used year-round?
For track meets, and whatever else they schedule there.
Indoor arenas could be converted quickly for conventions, other sports (your suggestion!!), and assorted other events it could be leased out for (Comic Book Convention, Grateful Dead Reunion Bash, :P ).
Seriously, think of all the high school, youth, walking, all comers (which Eugene is already famous for---outdoors!!) events they could schedule during the "other" 9 months of the year!!

One example of how to recoup your $$$$$ outlay:
In Wasilla AK, back when Sarah Palin was Mayor, they approved a half-cent raise in sales tax to pay for what became the Curtis C Menard Sports Complex.
Total cost was $14 million.....and it was all paid off within 10 years, after which the sales tax was repealed!!
And that place, in 10,000 population Wasilla, is used year-round, just as I described above!!
Think how much MORE active such a place would be in a metro area like Eugene!!

The great Villanova teams of Jumbo Elliott (no relation) used to train outdoors in the winter on a former Madison Square Garden track.

Oregon already has a four lane, 120m track in the football facility.

Also, spending the public's money on stadiums/arenas/sports facilities is unnecessary welfare at best and extortion at worst.
