  • Best college track facilities?

From those who have been to many of them, how would you rank the top 5 or ten?

I've heard a lot of good about these five:

    Oregon:

Penn is a joke. Has only what, 4 legal lanes? And you have to do the throws at a field a mile away. (Relays must be an awesome meet to see, of course, but its clearly not a facility meant for hosting real trackmeets.)

Bill, Too many good ones out there to name them all, but I have always liked NC State, dropped and surrounded with pines, field events visable & Florida. You didn't name your own UT. A solid facility if I remember correctly.

I personally loved the Florida State facility. Not that it had all the fancy trimmings of the Ducks site, but it is a wonderful setting with the large pines surrounding the track. Very comfortable site for training and holding a meet. It was also great to get out of Cincinnati during early spring to travel south for a nice warm meet. We don't get them too often here in the Ohio Valley!

P.S. - FSU has a particularly special place in my memory in that it is where I set my Jav PR

Kurt, the jav at FSU is obviously sloping downhill and NCAA qualifying marks are not accepted from that facility.

I haven't seen the new digs at Oklahoma, but I hear they are plushy. Only time will tell.

Check out Clemson's new indoor spot on the second site. Outdoos is on the first. They have 10 lanes outdoors and five LJ/TJ pits. Also a HJ approach where you can accomodate the wind and or another comp at the same time.

Yes Penn is no good as it's not in one place. I am also considering indoor facilities! Harvard has the famous tune-able track indoors and an outdoor facility just done in '96. Penn State has an indoor facility that is multi-use and the banking goes up and down hydraulically (sp). I think I remember them having a nice outdoor spot too. Rutgers used to have a great facility in the Football Stadium but it's gone to a new site now. Princeton has Jadwin Gym and then the Track in the Stadium still I think (correct me if they moved it out). My vote is still for my Alma Mater, Clemson. The new Indoor building is right next to the outsoor track.

maybe coloring my memory of them is the stadium stairs sprints we had to do at the next door harvard stadium.. mmm vomitting again just thinking about it!

I was really considering the quality of the attention given to Track and Field. I suppose pictuesque-ness is also a quality to be looked at, that's why I used to love Rutgers Stadium. I trained there for many years and ran thousands of flights of stairs there. My wife has instructions to scatter my ashes on those stairs.

The fairly new mondo track at Navy is fast. Nice facility.

Edwards stadium at California is pretty nice. Good track, all field events in stadium, holds about 20K people, lots of history. Downside, worst hot dogs in the history of the world.

When I was young, I thought I'd want my ashes scattered on the cinder track at my college, so that I'd become part of the track itself. I'm glad I didn't die young and have that done because now I'd be buried under a slab of Mondo. (Yes, there are other reasons, I'm glad of that.)

OU is the Taj Mahal of new facilities. Unbelievably nice!!

                              Buckeye II:

I haven't thrown at FSU since '89 and haven't been back there since, but neither the infield or outside throwing areas were downhill at that time. I can assure you that marks were accepted from FSU at that time.
