  • Is Koji MUROFUSHI a clear favourite for Gold?...

Certainly among the most popular athletes in
Japan, can you imagine this top-World class
Hammer thrower became the third all-time perfor-
-mer last year(84m86), not so far from Yuriy
SEDYKH's legendary WR(86m and something) set
    in 1986?
    A question for Field statisticians:
Who was the last Japanese T&F World Recordholder?

I think it was a TJ'er, Tajima might have been his name (I am not sure, it is around 50 years). He was the first one over 16 m.

Murofushi looked to be clear favourite for gold leading up to the WCh last year. Alongside throwing 84.86m, he won pretty much most of his pre-championships competitions, but then choked in the final of the WCh and finished 3rd!

I'd like to see him win gold this year in Athens, but lets hope he gets it right on the day.

And Paris was the second year in a row he ended on a low note: he had No. 1 pretty much sewed up in ’02, then lost at the World Cup.

You can see if Koji is the real deal at the Pre Classic on June 19th. He's been training in Eugene with Lance Deal, and really wants to throw on the Hayward Field facility. We're bringing in Rendell from Australia and Khersontsev from Russia to make it a Grand Prix competition. Lance says Koji is ready to break his MR. To find out what that is, go to preclassic.com

He was also the world leader going into WC in '01.
He may have big meet problems. Head?

Bump. Murofushi is flying under the radar in the year of his Olympic title defence, but he has had some good results recently:

              Toyota, July 21: 81.87 (80.77, 80.88, 81.87, x, 80.71, 80.87).
              Toyota, July 27: 80.34.

I'd much rather he won in Beijing than any of the other likely leading contenders.

I was going to write these exact thoughts yesterday!

You must be thinking of a different year. Last year he only had one competition before the WCh, and that was a 79.24 at the national champs.

You can hardly say he choked in 2001. He threw 82.92 in the WCh final, which was only half a meter down on his PB at the time.

Whatever gave you that idea? He's currently 8th on the world list. Ivan Tikhon won the last 3 editions of the WCh, and he's thrown over 3.5 meters farther than Murofushi this year.

He has shown a consistent form over 80m lately

                        80.98 - June 27 (also 80.86 in series)
                        81.87 - July 21 (also 80.88, 80.87, 80.77, 80.71 in series)
                        80.34 - July 27

with his 81.87 he is 3rd on 2008 list.

but all results is from "small" meets in Japan.

Do look at the dates. Most of this thread is from 2004.
