Re: USATF 2013 - m800: Brandon Johnson leads SF at 1:44.78
Heat 1
Jones was like a rabbit, except he finished, sort of, his last lap a full 10 seconds slower than his first. He set the rest up beautifully. Greer had the fastest 2nd lap. Jock finished well after being 4th at the bell.
Heat 2
Sowinski, 52.66, 52.63, finished really strongly.
When the pace is 52, Symmonds is right there.
No battle for 4th in this race.

Great race by Symmonds; it seemed his goal was to help his teammate Mulder advance to the final.
This was a missed great story -- Sowinski went to Iowa! You could hear all of the local cheering and they seemed clueless, or at least unable to add a story line on the fly [but one that they should have been prepared for after his AR this winter].
Gutsy race by Solomon to take it out at 50 flat certainly paid off. Only with this kind of racing any of the americans would have a chance for a medal !
Nice to see three guys under 1:44 in a final at nationals, especially since two of them have shown themselves capable of making an OG final at today's level of world competition.
Really promising performances for each of these top 3. Note:
For Solomon and Symmonds, today's times are 2nd fastest ever for each (PBs in London final). Great consistency & improvement for these veterans. Given the competition in this event, I would probably not pick either to medal, but I would expect each to be in the mix as they were in London, and thus I should state that each has an outside chance.
For Johnson, this is a big PB, from his 1:44.78 run in the SF of this meet. He just took up this event last season, and seems to have great potential.
Further notes on Symmonds: I continue to be impressed with his high-level consistency over a long period of time in this event. Even though Solomon's victory today broke his 5-year win streak at USATF, he nevertheless has this record at USATF: 1st or 2nd every year from 2006-2013 (2nd in 06 & 07, 1st 08-12, 2nd today) -- i.e., every year he has contested this meet; and he has a sub-1:45 SB now for 7 consecutive seasons, including sub-1:44 now for five seasons.
