  • World Youth Championship

The World Youth Trials begin tuesday.

    Two questions come to mind:
Does anyone know if Mary Cain has to run in the 1500 prelims and finals to be able to go?
Since no other American except Mary Cain has met the qualifying standards for the 3000m, although both Rebekah Topham and Anika Gompers could conceivably meet the standards during the trials, could Mary simply jog around the track, finish in last place and automatically gain a berth if only one of the two meet the standards during the race.

    Interesting sidebar

Rebekah Topham ran in the US Jr championship in the 1500. Since she already has met the standard in that event, and if Cain is not running, she stands a chance to be one of the two going to Donetsk. This would make it unlikely she would try the 3000 instead. Mary Cain could walk it and qualify if she so chose.

The US world youth trials are off to a good start. Courtney Corrins wins the girls long jump in 21', followed by Kenturah Orji 20'7.25", both wind legal. Olivia Baker wins the girls 400m in 52.71, followed by Raevyn Rogers 53.34.

Raevyn Rogers pretty impressive. After finishing 2nd in the 400m with a 53.34, she comes back to win the 800m in 2:05

          Re: World Youth Championship

Don't know if this should be in a separate thread, but did anyone see the webcast when the boys HJ was going on....towards the end of today's session?

A kid jumped, but missed, and rolled off the right side of the pit....onto what looked like cement!
He hit his head....pretty hard, it seemed.
A med person ran over, as did several others, while he laid there, rubbing his head.
After some consultation....and some more recovery......he made his final attempt (at 7 feet or so), but missed.

I'm not a HJ expert, but is there a cement flooring next to the pit in meets.....or is it usually grass or the asphault (??) of track composition?
Seems pretty dangerous to have cement right next to the pit!

I'm happy the boy is okay....but it could have been a lot worse!!

Marlon Humphrey had a nice day.

            At 8:45 am he wins 110H in 13.67 in a -3.1
            http://www.usatf.org/events/2013/WorldY ... s/F602.asp

then a few hours later goes 50.75 to win the 400H. At the prep national meet he won in 50.25 when he only ran the 400 hurdles as he was coming off a month of inactivity due to a back injury.

But on msn.com today I also see this regarding an unofficial visit to Ole Miss and the KKK:

The meet was open to those born in '96-'97, so if the ladies at New Balance wanted to compete for a spot, they were welcomed to.

Are the heights of the hurdles at the Youth championships the same (36" and 39") as they're running in US high schools?

                    Re: World Youth Championship

For both boys and girls the hurdle heights are the same as US HS although they are running the 400 hurdles.

                      NO, they are not!
                      36 for the 400 and 39 for 110 are for the junior (18-19 yo) level..youth use 33 for 400 and 36 for the 110.
Female stick to 30 for both at youth level.

                          Re: World Youth Championship

Sorry BUT USATF has the rights to compete as they like...but IAAF and any other country in the world use the following :
                          110 hs youth 91 cm
                          400hs youth : 84 cm
Please refer to IAAF world youth champs Timetable, and search all the 4 events.
                          http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/iaaf-w ... able/byday
Also, in the link you show me, for 110 boys are 39 , the most common used in hs, and below 36, the required youth height.

No, actually, the heights are 91.4 cm (36") and 83.8 cm (33").

Sure, but anyone in the world outside U.S. refers to the metric measures for the sake of semplicity: sure the correct ones are 33 and 36, but not 36 and 39 for 400 and 110.
