Re: Is there a list of athletes who have WILDCARDS for Mosco

"impossible" to answer that, because the federations have some control over that. Just because the IAAF grants you a wild card doesn'tmean your nation will follow suit.

And there are a half-dozen or so "conflicts" where a nation has both the defending champ (all of whom in theory are wild cards) and last year's Diamond League champ (who also gets a wild card).

But you can't have both. Which is why the U.S. named reigning world champ Jason Richardson as its wild card in the 110H, and Aries Merritt (the DL winner) had to finish top-3 in Des Moines (which he did).

Keeping in mind what gh wrote, here are the athletes who earned wildcards to Moscow, even if some of the athletes might not be able to use them.. Asterisks signify both athletes from same country, so only one of the two can go as wildcard in that event. (courtesy of a LetsRun thread, link below.)

You're welcome. And to clarify, the first sentence quoted in your post was from the original letsrun author. So as not to be misunderstood, it should more accurately be written "The first person listed is the Diamond League winner, the second is the 2011 World Champion".

It's up to the individual national federation to chose which athlete gets the wildcard when both the World Champ and DL Winner in the same event are from the same country. USA Track & Field avoids having to make the decision in cases like this by having the rule that World Champ takes priority over DL winner.

Now that Blake has withdrawn the wildcard for the 100m will most likely go to Bolt.

Kind of irrelevant now that Bolt is already the 100m national champ.

But does the wildcard mean a 4th member from a country can go? Or is that just the winner?

No that's not correct, Carter is not now in......the wildcard is for an individual not for a country.

To reply to a previous comment re individual Federations decide whether 2011 world champ or 2012 DL winner gets wildcard (in the cases where they have both) my understanding (I haven't seen it written but was told by a senior IAAF official) that the reigning world champion takes preference.

the IAAF official was wrong (far as I know). Choice between the two was left to the individual federations. And any ongoing decision the federation makes isn't binding at the IAAF level. As noted on other thread, when actual entry time comes IAAF will look at your people, and if you've got a legit wild card, they're in.

As in, U.S. could change its 110H wild card from Richardson to Merritt at this point and the IAAF wouldn't care.

gh is entirely correct. If Jamaica uses Bolt's 100m wild card, they can enter a 4th man in the Moscow 100.

As stated in my first post, the list was taken from a letsrun thread, which I also linked to. I didn't realize that the author had omitted those events. I've added the hammer athletes in the list above. Thanks for pointing it out.
