  • monaco? will the top kenyans be there?

asbel kiprop, silas kiplagat, isaih koech are on the start list, but i got a tweet, kenya WILL NOT send the runners who qualified for worlds in moscow to any meets until after the world championships.

there is not a lot of ethiopians running monaco so the distance events could be very watered down in monaco.

can anyone confirm or deny that the world qualifiers for kenya wont run monaco?

According to the start lists, three of the 4 5000 entrants are in the meet.
I take tweets with several grains of salt; many turn out to be untrue, although not all.

Re: monaco? will the top kenyans be there?

W 1500 start list is now up:
Anderson, Belete, Burka, Hassan, Jamal, Kibiwott, Langat, Martinez, Moser, Obiri, Rodriguez, Rowbury, Simpson, Teferi (may be pacemaker), Phoebe Wright (pacemaker?)

Kenyans are still listed for the M 5000, but article on front page seems to indicate the Kenyan Association is pulling their passports so they can't compete outside Kenya before the WC. OTOH, it said possible exceptions for those having significant DL points.

Given this, I would question whether Obiri, Kibiwott and Langat will compete.

BTW, Kiplagat is no longer listed in the M 1500.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see who competes.

Some of this national-association crap reminds me of the old squabbles with the AAU.

Why would Teferi be a pacemaker? She's run a 4:05, placed 2nd to Kipyegon in the 2011 WYC, 2nd last year (to Kipyegon again) in the WJC and is an up and comer in her own right. Did she not make her teams WC?

Just a wild guess on my part. AFAIK, Ethiopia has not yet named their team. 1500 might be G Dibaba, Hassan, Embaye or Teferi, I suppose. I'm very anxious to find out whom Ethiopia will select, in all the distances.

I thought I saw a news item somewhere that said that the Kenyan Federation had OKed the participation of the 5000 men. Of course, that report may not have been accurate. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

"Baby Baby" is in the 1500. T Dibaba and Defar both doubling 5/10. Meselech Melkamu, 2nd-fastest ever at 10K, is in the marathon team.
