They didn't say that - they said they disagreed with the concept of a boycott. They also said that in 1980. It was not their decision and would not be now if the government said they couldn't go.
But it WAS their decision to boycott in 1980. The British Government decided to boycott and fortunately for the British athletes and fans, their Olympic Association refused to go along with that decision. Since National Olympic Committees, not governments, send teams, the Brits did the right thing in spite of their government.

The USOC, on the other hand, voted to go along with the US Government's demand that we boycott. It was a vote that all of our individual sports' governing bodies participated in, including representatives of winter sports that had already participated in the Winter Games earlier that year. They could have voted the other way, as their British counterparts did, but they didn't.

I hope, based on their statement today, that if the US Government did decide to boycott Sochi (which I very much doubt will happen), the USOC will do the right thing, which they cravenly refused to do in 1980.

It must have something to do with national security if Snowden is the reason... so maybe a boycott would upset Snowden so much he wouldn't spill anymore secrets to the Russkis or the media?
Yeah, that must be the reason. Or something along those lines.

No, the last guy who fomented an Olympic boycott came from the other side of the aisle.

And that's the end of the politicizing of this thread, plz.

i was only 9 in moscow and 13 in LA and i still recall the effect of those boycotts. it did not have any desired political effect and punished innocent hard working young men and women.
these boycotts have never worked at any time in history. just because putin is a dictator we should NOT punish our young athletes and crush their aspirations. politians should butt out and stay out of sports !

I guess that people are tired of Senator Graham complaining about Benghazi, Libya all of the time, so he has to have something new to complain about.

BTW, the USOC said that they would not boycott.

Is my memory at fault, but did not the American government and diplomats play a significant role in persuading the Chinese to let at least one dissident, who was not in good health I recall, have asylum in the States, under human rights international agreement.

Taking up golf would just make Lolo boring - unless she played in her beach volley ball uniform.

You don't get that Graham is considered a MODERATE in South Carolina. Hell, in some parts he's considered a leftist.
Probably why I have never been to South Carolina, and have never had the inclination to do so either.

"I love the Olympics, but I hate what the Russian government is doing throughout the world," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told NBC News on Tuesday. "If they give asylum to a person who I believe has committed treason against the United States, that's taking it to a new level."
While I have no respect for Putin and his government it is an interesting take by Graham given Guantanamo Bay, the guaranteed absolute certainty of WMDs in Iraq, the missile bombing of the Chinese Embassy, the Kim Dotcom debacle here in New Zealand and so on.

Thank goodness that the idiots of SC who put this man in the Senate don't get to run the US Government.

If the US boycotted the Winter Olympics no one would care except the poor bastards who don't get to go. On the positive for the Lolo haters that means there will be less of her in the media. Personally, I am hoping Lolo will take up beach volleyball.
