  • Look out Usain Bolt Alan Oliveira 10.57 World Record!!!!!

Anniversary Games at the London Olympic Stadium 2013

ALAN OLIVEIRA WINS THE MEN'S T43/44 100M AND BREAKS THE WORLD RECORD. .
What A Race. Richard Browne was away from the blocks like lightning and Peacock was always chasing. But both were unable to keep up with the astonishing Oliveira.

He sprinted over the line and beat the T44 world record by over 0.2 of a second. He ran a stunning 10.57.

But not just that. Browne, a T43 runner like Peacock, who finished in second, ran 10.75 and broke the T43 world record as well. Peacock had to settle for a personal best with 10.84. Five of the runners in the race ran personal bests overall.

Alan Oliveira smashed the world record for T43 200metres -- and then proposed to his girlfriend at the finish line.
The Brazilian, who famously took Oscar Pistorius' T44 200m Paralympic title at London 2012 and was then criticised by the South African over the size of his blades, raced to victory at the IPC athletics world championships in Lyon.

His time of 20.66seconds shattered Pistorius' previous mark of 21.30 to land the world title, the first of his career, to add to his gold and silver medals from the London Paralympics.

He then marked the moment by asking his girlfriend to marry him -- live on Brazilian telveision.

Oliveira took Briton Jonnie Peacock's T43 100m world best last month by running 10.77 in Berlin, taking 0.14sec off Peacock's mark.

He said of his win today: 'I am really happy about my performance. I made a great start and then in the straight I saw on the giant screen that I was leading with a good distance I saw the seconds passing by and I realised I could break the world record. I hope I will do the same at the 100m.'

Awesome athlete (and accomplishment), but just as wheelchair athletes can annihilate their legged peers (1500 record is 2:55), so will blade runners with longer and more tensile blades. The record is rendered virtually meaningless because of the tech progress, just like fiberglass poles did.

There's no evidence that Oliveira (20.66) will ever get anywhere near Bolt (19.19), whatever blades the former is using.

That's because we don't have the technology yet. Wheelchair athletes used to be much slower than runners. Then the wheelchairs got much better.

The good news: We have erased that vile cretan off one record book...
The bad news: This entire blade running technology race continues unabated and will eventually produce an 18 second 200m. Run on the same facilities as T&F it will continue to be conflated with athletics and eventually reduce the sport to something we wont recognise.

Or more likely a 42-second 400m. Those blades seem to be better at maintaining speed than gaining speed, making them more suitable for the longer sprints.

Do we know that for a fact?

I mean, I'm sure they're indeed better, but my take would be more that it has gone from "weekend warriors" doing a marathon to fun to dedicated athletes who work at it full time, and with the added credence that has brought, the talent pool has also gotten a lot huger.

Next question. Sure the athletes have changed, but it's still a bamboo vs, fiberglass situation.

I wonder how much the chair in the first photo above sold for... Today a good racing chair like the one in the second photo above goes for about $3,000...

I will probably be as wrong about this as I am about most things, but I just don't expect that people who pay attention to athletics will conflate the performances of paralympian athletes with full-bodied (or whatever I am to call them) athletes. Wheelchair marathoners traverse the same courses as marathon runners, and do so much faster. Those who pay any attention to both know that what elite wheelchair marathoners are doing is impressive, and that what elite marathon runners do is impressive. I think the performances of elite "blade running" paralympian sprinters will continue to be seen as distinct from performances of full-bodied sprinters. But, as usual, I have no idea.

Given the much smaller population of paralympians, I'm guessing that most people assume the paras are operating at a much lower level. Some, however, are indeed extraordinary.

How about a double amputee, Markus Rehm, now at 26-1 (7.95)?

If prosthetics are an aid in running (which I truly believe), you can imagine what I think they do for jumping.
