16 men broke 4:00 for the mile in one race. Is that any kind of record?

BINGO! I posted that elsewhere....we're getting the good Matt and the bad Matt. Up until earlier this season, I'd never seen him quit in races, but one can point to Manzano's last race before the Olympics last year when he ran around 4:00 for a mile, so all is not lost. Very possible that this was simply a tune up for Moscow....a hard 1320 and then coast?

On the positive side he did break the four-minute mile
How many is that now? Surely T&F News is keeping track of all American sub-fours, not just performers!! >:-)

Again, confusion on the part of Storey/Hutchings as to what the first split was. 400? 440y? Candy mint? Breath mint? You're both wrong; it's a suppository! (Remember that one?)

I was trying to split Souleiman, whom I considered the favorite, but it's pretty hopeless to get 440 y splits in a TV race. These are ballpark, anyway: 55.2, 1:54.2 (59.0), 2:53.5 (59.3). They gave Som's "400" as 54.76, which is really ~409, so too fast, then dropped way off 2nd & 3rd laps. If these guys want to run well under 3:50, they have to keep the pace up in the middle.

Hell of a run by Choge, who is off'n'on, and Souleiman almost got there. Also good races by Magut and Komen; this last got all his best marks between '05 and '07, including two sub-3:49s and two sub-3:30s.

    Centrowitz' last three: DNF, 3:33.58 SB (8), 3:58.75 (16) -- last 120 17.89!

Charlie Grice (GBR) PB of 3:54.61 (=3:37.23) also seems worth noting, in part because he's still just 19yo., and in part because, converted, it also surpasses his 3:38.13 PB (Hengelo 2013).

    ^ Yes.

Some further notes, to put these in each athlete's "comprehensive, converted" context (and hoping, as usual, I did the math correctly):

    Rupp 3:52.11 = 3:34.91
He has a couple of faster times, 3:50.92i (=3:33.81) from early this year; and 3:34.75 (Oxy, 2012). Those noted (and recognizing as well that, no, he isn't Mo Farah), this performance seems pretty good (to me), in relation to his 10k/5k preparation.

    McNamara 3:52.42 = 3:35.20
He has just one faster, from earlier this summer, so this one is high on his list.

    Torrence 3:52.74 = 3:35.50
His resume is a bit deeper than these others (save Rupp), so he has in addition to his 3:34.19 three others in the 3:34-3:35 range. (And I really wish he could/would have the opportunity to really go for a fast 5k, or even a fast 10k, should one ever be run again anywhere.)

    Bayer 3:52.90 = 3:35.64
He has just one faster, 3:34.47, from earlier this summer. This is just the second time he has been under 3:36 or its equivalent. (And yes, I agree w earlier post that he should have been given the opportunity to be in the USATF 5k.)

    Heath 3:53.15 = 3:35.87
Also just one faster, 3:34.12, and also just the second time under 3:36 or its equivalent.

Can't believe there is no thread on this. Maybe I missed it but.. Rupp has only an outdoor PR; it is silly for the IAAF not to include indoor marks, since they are universally harder than on the 400 tracks. While not placing high Bayer hits 3:52.90, a great time for the college Academic All-American who is one of those denied the opportunity to run the 5000 at the Trials. Anyone else think that a 5000 guy that can run a 3:52 was a worthy entry?

The listing of marks borders on being silly. No 1500 marks either directly or converted, and no indoor marks, if better.
