  • democracy? who needs democracy?!

See story on front page. Lamine Diack would prefer not to have a contested election when he steps down. He apparently rather name his successor and have it rubber-stamped.

'However, in keeping with IAAF tradition, Diack said he hoped to avoid a contested presidential election by announcing his choice as successor and asking the Congress to support his recommendation. “I will say who must be my successor and the reason why,” said Diack. “Then the house can decide whether they want to follow or not. If they say yes, then OK. If not, I will organise a fair competition, but expecting the one I believe to the best will win.” History suggests Diack will get his way since there has never been a contested election for the IAAF presidency.'

This is an IAAF tradition that I'm not happy with....I much prefer to see a contested election than a case of one leader appointing his successor. Smacks of North Korea, to me.

I'm not happy at the idea of Sir Craig Reedie getting a shoo-in to succeed John Fahey as head of WADA:

"The highly regarded Reedie, the former British Olympic Association chairman, is already an executive member of the Wada board and is leading the Evaluation Commission into the bids for the 2020 Olympics on behalf of the International Olympic Committee. His only rival for the role, Switzerland's Denis Oswald, appears to have ruled himself out with his decision to run for the IOC presidency in September."

I'm now reading in the Sunday Times that Edwin Moses is preparing to throw his hat in the WADA ring, and I'm much rather see Moses as head of WADA than Reedie....
My heart is still in the Caribbean....
