Re: Eaton in Estonia: mediocre results but high expectations

I agree all the way; my possibly obscure point was that only amongst this crew would 13.7 seem "mediocre"; and now it's good to hear that AE concurs. As I posted at the time, I'd begun to fear that a lapse in competitive juice--at least in individual events formerly points of pride. After all, how many Decathletes, beside Milt Campbell and Rafer Johnson (and Joel Shankle, Bronze '56), have placed so well against Open hurdlers?

As for SP and related events, I'm more concerned w/ consistency than PRs. When 15m becomes second nature, along w/ anything closer to 50m in Discus, I'll breathe easier.

Nor would I call anything between 14.50 and 15m SP anything but consistent: I mean we're talking less than 50 pts. And now that we've seen much better, nothing than less than 60m in Jav. will suffice.
Great non-news on PV: AE looked so great over 530 (seen from right there in the old Hayward Field barnlike side), nothing would surprise me. Good to hear the fire's there!
Jack - if you evaluate Eaton's performance against other decathletes then of course 13.72 is very good. However, against Eaton's standards this is not that good (it is not ranked in the top ten times in the 110h). He himself called it a "fair performance". Same story for the SP (although 14.57 is ranked No. 10 in Eaton's performance).
As for the PV - for Eaton to talk about 5.60 suggests that he done similar hight in practice. This will add another ~90 points to his sum of PBs. Taking into account the expected improvement in DT (and probably JT) I think that Obrian's days in the top of the ladder are numbered.

An interesting question is what will be Eaton's sum of PBs when he finally retire?

Seriously though, when was the last time that none of the predicted T&FN medalist were in the top ten for that year?
I suspect it is not all that rare in the decathlon.

The 20K walk picks also have no one from the top 10 (or even the top 20)

The only one to even have an SB is Tallent (I thought he'll do the 50?)

As for the PV by decathletes, a 5.40+ grad assistant said that if he had 10 months with the schools decathlete he could get him to the Trials. That was when the guys were back at 5.05 and 4.90 and are now at 5.40 territory.

It this illustrates one of the strengths of this board, with its broad international reach and a set of posters who focus on areas some of us would not otherwise get up to speed on (e.g., the multi-events with the likes of olorin, decfan, ...).

He possesses every attribute necessary to be a 6-meter jumper! Just lacks the single-event focus (time).
A number of us have been saying that the pv is an under exploited strength for Eaton. Apparently, he agrees.
And I am part of the group that suggested he can potentially go much higher. However I didn't think he can improve his PB by 30cm in one year. until the interview I was expecting roughly 5.40 this season.
