Re: It's official, Cragg out of 5000m
Since Cragg did not compete at the regional, he will not be able to defend his 5,000 meter title. Moreover, this will now make the men's team race more interesting as Arkansas will be looking more closely as LSU, Auburn and Florida are right on their shoulders.

Wording at the head of the lists changed last night. Now says
<<******************************* IMPORTANT NOTES ***************************
+++ This is the list of those accepted into the National Championship
before the deadline for medical scratches. All AQ's are now listed. +++++
************************************************** *************************>>
No Cragg.

Below is a story all about it from the Northwest Arkansas Times:
"Cragg received a medical excuse and clearance from the meet referee, John Chaplin, the former U.S. Olympic coach and former coach at Washington State."

Re: It's official, Cragg out of 5000m
Cragg ran a super 5,000 at the Cardinal Invitational -- is it wise in an Olympic year for him to attempt the 10 and the 5 within such a short time frame? Is it a good workout, or another example of a collegian sacrificing internatinal ambition for college glory?

Re: It's official, Cragg out of 5000m
Forget college glory, it's about the team championship. I'm sure Arkansas is still comfortable with what they have for another run at the title, but all it takes is for a Mulvaney to not score high enough (or at all) in their respected events.
It's going to be an interesting team battle when it comes down to the wire.
As noted with the article above, they are still trying to get Cragg in the 5k before the start lists come out on Thursday.

No. The intent of the rule was to not advance injured people to the national meet (and take the spot of a healthy person). The athlete must give an honest effort in every in event in which they hope to advance.

Re: It's official, Cragg out of 5000m
First, I'll admit my knowledge of the sport is nowhere close to what it should be, but I think this was the right decision. Cragg skipped the 5000 at NCAA Regionals because of a cramp in his calf. Isn't that just the luck of the draw? What would have happened in the prelims at nationals if he'd had a cramp? Could he have advanced anyway? If he'd had a cramp in the finals, would they have re-run the race?
Perhaps (and I mean this sincerely) I don't understand the qualifying rules. Could someone get into the NCAAs based on a time from an earlier meet, even if they did poorly at Regionals? If that's the case, I'd say Cragg was jobbed; otherwise, I don't see any reason for special treatment.

Bob Bettwy: <<The athlete must give an honest effort in every in event in which they hope to advance.>>
Does anybody know why Johanna Nilsson didn't run the West Regional 1500 final? She consequently doesn't show on the declarations list in that event? And is anybody making a big deal about the fact that Giovanni Lanaro no-heighted in the West Regional pole vault, Bennie Brazell false-started in the Mideast Regional 400-hurdle prelims, and Dan Taylor fouled out in the Mideast Regional shot put, and all three of them are on the declarations lists?
