I doubt it will happen. I was in Scotland this summer and even Scot's who were pro autonomy and devolution are not so keen on the idea of full independence.
They're very cynical about the current Scottish ministers and the inflated costs that keep appearing in the day to day running of the country. The latest being their 6 million pound security entrance to the Parliament building. They were already pissed off that the cost of the parliament building was over ten times the original estimated cost.
And besides, the last Scottish athlete to win an individual medal at a global outdoor champs was Liz McColgan back in 1991. If Scotland do gain independence (which is a big 'if'), it won't hurt Britain's medal chances very much at all.
even the particularly smug leader of the SNP and First Minister will have a heck of a job turning round the current views of a 60% majority for staying within the UK. My year in 2014 would be perfect if Salmond announced his resignation as boss man of the SNP having been whupped next Autumn
Is about to take a hit if the Scottish 'independence' initiative passes. Scotland will field a separate team and not count towards the Brit total.
[there's an article on the home-page]
Most Scots do not want to be independent. Also those Scottish medal winners are mostly entirely dependent on the funding from Britain's public resources have and many live in England. Even if Scotland keeps up the athlete funding there is no way they could compete for the wider coaches, facilities and national competition that sports like Rowing, cycling, Sailing and Athletics have.
