When I said "didn't kill themselves," I didn't mean that they took it easy.
From the results, it looked to me that the top three teams were all in a big pack. They were probably looking at each other and assessing the situation. They all had at least 5 runners there who were running within themselves. The 5th runner from the top 3 teams finished within a second of each other. All three teams easily qualified for nationals. That is how a qualifying race should be run.
wasn't my observation/conclusion, pack after #2 runner was about 30+ strong with a mile to go. your mileage may vary
re Nationals fields, I'm happy -- both Indiana's men & women made it. No surprise for the men, but pleasantly surprised that the women advanced. Also pleased to see Ohio U's Juli Accurso win the Great Lakes regional.

The men made it despite having taken it a bit easy (raced the Big Tens very hard and emotionally, so they took a chance of running it with a scaled-down energy level (and rested their number 2 guy) to recover and prep for NCAAs. I think that the coach (who I consider a bit under-rated) made the right choice. Last year, with their number one guy Andy Beyer (NCAA 1500 champ) injured at the Regional meet, they still finished 10th at NCAAs.
The women were a surprise, as they were well behind the top three teams and pretty far behind 4 and 5 but their three freshmen ran close with their seniors and they beat Toledo and Ohio State. So, six Big Ten teams made it on the womens side, and only three on the mens side.
CU's men's team 2nd to Northern Arizona, maybe a little bit of an off day. Hopefully they'll be ready next weekend. Ok St's top 5 were within 6 seconds of each other, maybe they're rounding into form, with more in the tank.
off-day, or were the Buffs overrated by stomping flatlanders at an altitude-killing Pac-10 meet? And now they meet another altitude bunch and the advantage is gone.
Could be. Though they won at sea level at Pre-Nats. I wonder if they might have peaked a bit too early. Wetmore usually has them peaking not just at NCAAs, but only in the last 2K of the NCAAs!
