  • What was so politically incorrect???

Yesterday there was a thread as to who we thought were the most attractive athletes on the female side of our sport. The first few posters predicted it would get pulled and of course it was. I really feel what was said was tasteful and in no way crude or derogatory of women. Mine was probably the most descriptive and I was really careful. In no way do I think what was there by the time I signed off down here in NZ (12:00 am) was "Sexist".

For years I have told people how I felt our sport was colorless,in that I had never seen any overt racism in my 35 years around it. But I have seen more reference to race on this site than I can believe yet a lot of it gets through. I have a hard time understanding why it's not ok to say an Athlete is attractive but it is ok to ask if Clemson's varsity fraternity Tarred and Feathered the black guys in the '70s.

There are three threads just about white sprinters. Should we pass the word around the world that if you're white you need to stay away from the sprints as you are a sub-category to the real sprinters? If I say I am offended at the white sprinter threads (I'm not, but I do think they are stupid so I don't speak to them) will they get pulled?

If we're going to politically correct in gender topics we should look at the racial side too. Or maybe the threads just go up and if you're not interested you don't respond!

My comment was that dyestat and letsrun own the proprietary rights to silly threads like that. Why not go over there and argue whether Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson has the cuter belly button ring?

Maybe because I enjoy the quality of conversation on THIS message board, and I don't want to go elsewhere. It was a cute thread that posed no harm. Funny you didn't mention my reference to how much racial discussion is allowed here. Your posts that I have read are knowledgeable and interesting. Why bother to mock people and tell them to go elsewhere when you could just as easily leave it alone and it will slowly go away as do most threads. It makes you come off as pompous and high-brow which I am sure you are not. There are way too many serious things in the world to get in a snit about. Or as they say in the islands, "ease ya'self mon". Oh and the guy who put the thread up is probably not appreciative of his thread being called "silly".
PS How is your 6'2" girl doing thsi season

You obviously have good points, but let me put it this way. Those boards attract a certain 'immature' perspective that I would rather not have to deal with here. A thread about 'hot looking chicks' (and that's essentially what it was), ALWAYS (really) devolves into T&A commentary. Since those boards have no problem with that, why not let it stay over there? I DO apologize for my pomposity (to a degree, you are right about the tone), but I just don't see a need for that here.

Fair enough. I wouldn't have gone over there just to talk T&A. There are a lot of topics here that I feel are bit, how do I say this...out there, so I don't get involved. I'm sure you do the same. I did ask about your 6'2" athlete and how her season is going.
            Cheers

Allow me to quote from Rule 3 of the Board, since you're a newbie (and a most welcome one, I might add) and haven't heard this before:

<<3. The definition of "objectionable post" rests solely with T&FN. Be advised up front that sexist/racist material is out of bounds. >>

Objectifying women athletes by hearing your opinions on how hot they look fits T&FN's defiition of objectionable and out of bounds. End of story.

Personally I have a big problem with the amount of race-focused chatter, despite the irony that the majority of such irrelevant crap comes from a black guy. I wonder if T&FN would allow Satch's racist "pale sprinter" threads and comments if such remarks were being made by a white poster with reference to black athletes.

So I agree that there is an inconsistancy here, but the problem is not the tasteless and puerile "who's attractive" topic, which was rightly pulled, but the fact that race-based material is not so treated.

Re: What was so politically incorrect???

There's a difference between race and racist just as there is between sex (or as the PC crowd call it "gender") and sexist.

OK, point taken. Knowing you are actively monitoring that fine line is reassuring.

Sprintstatman raises a valid point. I would suggest that what we've seen all too much of on this board is racialist thinking--that is, a constant emphasis on race. Racialist thinking is not the same thing as racist thinking, but it IS a prerequisite to it. In the short run the former may be amusing; in the long run it's ugly.
