  • Lunn 3:39 at Oxy

Just got home from the meet at Occidental and Lunn won in 3:39 and change. He had two Farm Teamers as rabbits and they took him through the first three laps all in right about 59 and then he closed in about 42. I had his last lap at about 57.

He was interviewed after the race and said he'd been doing altitude training in Colorado and was headed back there for another week. He also said he had hoped to get the A-standard tonight but would try to at Pre and if not there, then at a last chance meet at Oxy on the 27th.

I am still a Jim Sorensen-backer... 3.43,85 for 5th in the same race as Lunn. Sorensen is 37-years-old, and has dropped his season-best from 3.53 to 3.43 with 9 weeks of training. He ran 3.46 to win his heat at the Stanford meeting last weekend, and has a life-time PB of 3.38,65 from Hechtel in 1996. His time of 3.43 is on the top-5 list for Americans competing at the age of 37, as is his 3.42,4 as a 36-year-old winner of one of the Can-Am meets last season.

Am I in some kind of time warp here? 59 second laps behind rabbits? Last lap in around 57? Is this 1957 or so?

Look, the guy was aiming for a 3:35-3:36...2:57 is a bit slow for that, but Lunn is not [yet] a 3:29 1500 meter runner...

Next time, if he goes through in 2:54, he should be fine...

OK. I can see that. Herb Elliott won the 1960 Olympic 1500M in 3:35.6 on a cinder track, so I guess I was off by three years...

I forgot to allow for all the progress we have made in the last 44 years... My mistake.
