  • What do the high jumper types think of this?

If I am doing my math right, it looks like it would be pretty close to a top 10 US all-time HS. A post to TC:

"Mason Jumps 2.20 Metres To Smash BC High School Record"

Just quickly scanned the TFN archives since 1999 - looks to be about 10 with jumps of 2.20 or better - plus add in the Gail Olsen, Tye Peacock, Edwards (from GA?) - maybe top 20 - sure somewhere there is an all time list - but that is still darn good

Good Jump, but not earth shattering. Several years ago Mark Boswell jumped 2.25 at Penn Relays when he was in High School in Canada.

Linus Thörnblad of Sweden cleared 2,30 last summer in Vellinge as an 18-year-old.

I'm guessing he may have been a fifth year high schooler(at least) to steal a page from those who always minimize the sub 4 canuck high schoolers.

Actually, the article states that he is 17yr and is a true high school senior. Still a very impressive jump and one that makes him a blue chip recruit (do they still use this term?).

2.20 does not make the top 50 all-time US HS.

You're probably right given this from this site(the whole metric conversion thing threw me):

                7-7 .................................. Andra Manson (Brenham, Tx) 02
7-6 .................. *Dothel Edwards (Cedar Shoals, Athens, Ga) 83
                7-5.25 ................................. Tom Smith (Heyworth, Il) 85
                7-5i .................................. Gail Olson (Sycamore, Il) 78
................................... Kenny Evans (Pine Bluff, Ar) 97
                7-4.75 ................................. James Lott (Refugio, Tx) 83
7-4.50 ............... Maurice Crumby (Balboa, San Francisco, Ca) 83
............................. *Rick Noji (Franklin, Seattle, Wa) 84
................................. Brad Speer (East, Wichita, Ks) 84
................... Paul Klemic (Mainland Regional, Linwood, NJ) 00

Look at the above list and tell me besides Noji and I think Edwards and in the future Mason, How many have gone on to adult success? IF I was recruiting for a school I would shy away from the 7 foot and higher high school kids. This is just my personal opinion but I don't think they get that much better, although there are exceptions I am sure.

They go from being the big fish in their local pond to being just another fish in the ocean. I think sometimes the change in coaching and training regimens do them in. It's like they climbed to the top of the mountain in High School, and then they see an even bigger mountain in front of them in College.

I would go after a hungry 6'8" to 6'10 guy who loves the high jump and is willing to train his ass off to get to the top.

We'll see if he is an exception when he goes to the big pond of Kentucky:

Kenny Evans was an Olympic finalist in 2000. That's pretty good.

That was when I was in the informationally deprived Barbados. ALso I wasn't paying attention as well as I have since moving to NZ. Sorry I missed that.

I have seen young Mike Mason jump on several occasions over the last few seasons. He has a very advanced technique for a high school jumper.
He uses a long, controlled and quite fast run-up.
He leans well in the curve and has a lightning quick take-off. He has an uncompilcated bar clearance with no exessive arch position. He is quite slim and I would think about 6'1" tall.
I don't know him but he seems to be a very composed and level headed young man.
I think only Boswell has jumped higher than Mason's 7' 2 1/2" in Canada so far this season.

speaking of arch positions - is that just a function of approach speed? The faster your run-up, the less arch you can have? In the old days we made distinctions bewtween speed floppers and power floppers - primarily based on the approach speed. The speed jumpers went over the bar in the L position, while the power floppers had the clear arch with the head tilted way back as the hips cleared. We have enough HJ-ers on this board to give some perspective on this. As a coach, I am always trying to improve my jumpers' arch, but maybe that's not always the ticket.
