He was born in 1966 which is where you probably got 38 years from. He was still competing until '98 when he tested positive for a second time and received a lifetime ban. I can't remember if he was able to appeal that. Since he hasn't competed since I'm guessing no.
I accidentally read Randy's birth date as the date he set the record. I had been thinking that it didn't sound right, when it suddenly occurred to me to correct my post, which couldn't be right.
But of course, the sharp observations of those here generally catch such gaffes in a heartbeat.
Thanks for the correction. That makes two screwed up posts in two days for me. About time for me to get put on self-imposed probation.
I remember reading an article last week or so and Cantwell was talking about how he hasent even backed off of his training or anything. But I have a feeling when he starts to back off and he's fully recoverd we will all be in shock of what he can do, I say high 74ft or even 75, THis guy should without out a doubt be the World Record holder, AND he's not even in his PRIME still has 4 more years to go.
GO CANTWELL!!!!!!! GODINA, NELSON and HOFFA YOU guys are awsome, keep making US shot putting such a huge part of Track and Field now.
Realise the 22.54 was in the rain!!!! Plus he had 3 throws over 22m which shows a certain consistency neccessary to throw 23m. He fouled his last 2 throws which makes me assume he was pushing for the record. I pray he'll get and not do a Jannus Robberts.
Look Jannus Robbert is my fave spinner without a doubt. I just wished he would of progressed from his 21.97m throw during his off season heavy weight training to get 23m but it hasn't happened. He's getting back at 21m but I'm praying he will get to the distances his enormous potential could allow him too. Getting a "clean" record holder would also be great because many people don't recognise Barnes record because of his drug ban. Go Cantwell!
Nope, definitely was not raining during the first round when Cantwell PUT (not threw) his 22.54m bomb. Definite rain, though, when Nelson popped his 71'+ put. Gotta have respect for that.
If you were at Drake Relays this year, you understand how rainy it was during the invitational men's SP. Cantwell's 67' that day was very impressive! I also liked how the throwers didn't wuss out becasue of the rain. Hoffa threw 64', Manz an almost PR 61'.
Canwell didn't have the collegiate season this year, which might bode well for the real season. The last 2 WCs, I picked the longest puter, who happened to be a collegian. That worked really well! At least Robberts made the final, unlike Carl M.
There is a distinction between puting and throwing (which is illegal). Something about proximity to head or shoulders. I don't think throwing would buy any advantage, unless someone with HUGE hand could come up with a discus style action.
