  • Golden Gala in Rome

It turns out I'll be in Rome on July 2 which is when the Golden Gala meet is. Anyone have any idea how to get tickets ahead of time? I can't find anything online.

    http://www.ticketeria.it - I'm going too!

And if you're looking for a hotel, then I suggest the "Hotel Clodio" - a nice looking 3 star hotel situated about 500m from the Stadium. They do a shuttle pick-up service to and from Ciampino airport.

Looks like the athletes are staying in the Ritz, but that's about 2-3 miles from the Stadium. More info about the meet can be found here:

    Hope this helps!

      Thank you for the info.
Do you know the time of the meet? (we are coming in from Florence that day)
I couldn't see a place to buy tickets on the website. Did you call?
It sounds like maybe you're been before? Is this a good meet?

Looks like it starts at around 8.00pm (Italy time). The schedule can be seen at:
        http://www.goldengala.it/showquestionen ... fldAuto=18

The ticketeria site has the GoldenGala info on this page:
        http://www.ticketeria.it/GoldenGala/goldengala-eng.html

They don't have an online booking facility, so you'll have to email them. I emailed them on Friday, so hopefully they'll respond tomorrow. The prices are very reasonable (about $20 for the best seats).

I've never been to this meet before, but it's a Golden League meet, so it's bound to have great performances (it's where Torri Edwards ran her 22.28 last year). To see the kind of standard that this event is, then the results of last year's meet should give you a good idea:
        http://www.iaaf.org/GLE03/results/event ... index.html

The good thing about Rome is that it's never quite packed out (partly because it's such a HUGE, amazing stadium), so you should always be able to get some decent seats.

          You've been very helpful.
I think, at the very least, it'll be so cool just to go to a meet in Europe. A new experience for me. I've been to the Trials in Sacto and am going again this year (I live there so that's convenient!)
          Thanks again for the info!

No worries - will hopefully see you round Rome!

I'd like to go to the US Trials one year (maybe 2008), or just go to the US full stop! (I'm from the UK, by the way). I'm considering going to LA for the 2006 World Cup, but it's still quite a long way away.

            Hope you enjoy Rome!

Start saving now! I've been planning this Italy trip for two years. Once we decided to go, just made sure I put the bucks away.
UK is on my list for the future, again! I love London and have been to a bit of northern England and Scotland. Still much more to see.
The Trials are very exciting...since the US is so deep in some events, it's like the Olympics at times. But it's hotter than hell in Sacto at that time so it's a lot of work to get through the 8 days, that's for sure. Still, an event not to be missed especially since I live so close. One day you'll make it! How about the Olympics for you? That's not too far away for you this year? I stupidly didn't go to LA in 84 because I thought it would be a madhouse...turns out it wasn't and I sure missed out. Not sure if the Olys will ever be in the cards for me to see but you never know.

If GG is still held in the Olympic stadium, one of those roll up seats with a back would be a good investment. No backs in '81 (finish line side WCup) or '87 (WC, opposite FL). Over the years, GG has had really good distance races. Enjoy!

Yes, Athens is only a 2-3 hour flight away, but it's still extremely costly! I was considering going to the World Juniors instead, but then changed that idea for a golden league meet, and Rome seemed the most appropriate (Zurich next year, hopefully!).

London is great (I live in Birmingham) and I'll be going to the Crystal Palace meet there this year. I'll also be going to the Birmingham International and Gateshead Grand Prix events.

I'd have loved to have gone to LA '84, but I was born just a couple weeks after it happened!

Okay, so make me feel old. I was born just a couple of years (yeah, right!) before 84.
Well, you're old enough for 2004 in Athens this year. Go for it!
Thanks again for the info and now I know to look for a 20 year English guy in Rome to thank you for all the help.

Very true. A pic of the seats in the Stadio Olimpico can be seen here:

Still, better than Zurich, where most of the tickets are standing-only!

                            Re: Golden Gala in Rome

The Rome meet is alot of fun. I've been the last 2 years and will be there again next month. Tickets are very cheap--even with the strong euro this year, the best seats will probably only be about $20-22. YOu can get tickets from various ticket agencies in town a day or so ahead of time (for example, I got mine the first year from a ticket agency in a record store on the major shopping street in Rome). Or, you can get them at the stadium the night of the meet. The tickets are for selected areas of the stadium and from there it's unreserved seating. So, the earlier you get there, the more choice you have in seating. (The stadium opens an hour or two before the meet begins.)

Transportation to & from the stadium can be a bit dicey if you're staying in the center of Rome. It's easy to get a taxi out to the stadium, but much harder to find one to take you back. There is a tram line that goes to a station about a half mile from the stadium (over the river) but you really have to study up to know which train goes where, and 11pm at night with thousands of people swarming around you is not exactly the time to learn...

You'll enjoy it...and Rome is an incredible city.

PS: Jon: The photo you show is of the cheap(est) seats. The meet never sells out, so there's no need to take these poor seats. As you can see on the left, the regular stadium seats have backs of a sort. Thus, even if you brought your own seat, you wouldn't have anyplace to put it...

According to thier website, one can purchase Metrebus tickets through any of the following means:
                              - at the approximately 2,000 businesses, which include tobacconists, newsagents, bars, stationers, in Rome and Latium (except for annual passes)
                              - in Rome, at the 300 automatic distributors (MEB) located in the municipal territory and installed at the main terminals and underground railway stations (except for monthly and annual passes)
                              - at company outlets (all kinds of tickets and passes)
                              - at the outlets located at railway stations throughout the territory of Rome and of Latium (all kinds of tickets and passes)
