Re: Elite woman jumps from bridge
Kathy Ormsby who ran for North Carolina State. It was in Indianapolis at the 1986 NCAA Outdoor Field and Track Championship. Ormsby was in the 10K and was running against Stephanie Herbst (who publicly battled severe eating disorder and is other main character in book) a runner who was once heralded as the natural replacement for Joan Benoit. Mid-race Ormbsby left track, ran up into stands, climbed a 7 ft fence, arrived at a bridge and toppled off bridge 50 ft to floodplain next to the White River. It appears, based on her recollection, that she had a panic attack (she had suffered from them previously and had fainted on several occasions) and the fall was unintentional. She was paralyzed in fall, but was able to finish school and is now an occupational therapist.
