  • 2-Mile Records - Men and Women

Does anyone know the USA outdoor 2 mile records for both men and women

    I found the world records:
    Men: 7:58.61 Daniel Komen (KEN)
    Women: 8:58.58 Meseret Defar (ETH)

But I can't find the USA outdoor 2 mile records anywhere

I have been searching the internet / USATF / IAAF / etc. for the past few days and have come up blank.

    Thanks

Re: 2 Mile Records - Men and Women

The Outdoor US 2 Mile records are:
Men: 8:07.07 by Matt Tegenkamp in 2007.
Women: 9:11.97 by Regina Jacobs in 1999.

I also have Top 24 Performers lists, both indoor and outdoor, for men and women, for the 2 Mile.
I have separate lists for High School, US, and the World.
(The HS lists do NOT include 3200 times, nor marks converted FROM 3200 times, nor any OT marks on the indoor lists.)

24th place times on the World and US outdoor lists are:
    Men: 8:13.51 and 8:24.14
    Women: 9:44.2 and 10:12.09

The US Women's list is so slow because I couldn't find enough "quality" open times to fill my Top 24 list, so had to fill it out with the top HS times I had. (See note above.)

Since there's a 2 Mile for Women at Pre, I'll give a few observations about it.

Based on the 3K times given, and known abilities of the entrants (assuming none are rabbits, who will DNF), I see ALL 21 entrants making my lists!!!

NONE of the listed entrants are already on my lists, so if they run 9:44.2 or faster, ALL 21 will enter my World list, almost totally revising it, top to bottom!!

    There are 5 Americans entered.
Assuming they all run faster than 10:12.09, all of THEM will enter my US list!!

For a 2 Mile fan like myself, this is a dream come true!!
I've been advocating a race like this over 2 Miles for a long time!!

My only criticism is that more elite Americans aren't entered, such as:
    Mary Cain
Jenny Simpson (She could make up for her faux pas indoors!! )
    Brenda Martinez
    Abbey D'Agostino
    etc etc etc!!

Basically the same goes for the men.
Let's get a 21 MAN field to race a high quality 2 Mile!!
The Men's outdoor lists, both US and World, could as easily be drastically revised!!

Re: 2 Mile Records - Men and Women

Thanks very much for the information. Someone else pointed me to the Alltime athletics list

      http://www.alltime-athletics.com/w2milesok.htm

Regina Jacobs mark isn't on this list and I was told that it is because her mark was achieved in a mixed race.

Do you have any info about this?

If it is true, does that make Jacobs mark invalid for record purposes?

      Thanks!

Re: 2 Mile Records - Men and Women

        I think it was.
But several sources accept it (or at least list it) as the AR.
My Record book differs in some ways from T&FN and other sources.

One of those ways is that I accept mixed race marks.
Cathy Schirro's 16:00.4 5000 in HS is on my HS 5K list.
As is Cayla Hatton's 33:17 10K from 2012, run in a mixed race.
Jack Shepard lists both of those in his HS Annual.

She ran the time....and it wasn't a 3200 or run indoors on an OT.....so I accept it.

If things go as I hope they will Saturday, that record will be GONE!!!!

She did it in a mixed race in Los Gatos.

But the sport's governing bodies don't recognize records at this distance anyway, and it should properly be called the AB.

Re: 2-Mile Records - Men and Women

2014 Prefontaine Meet (IAAF Diamond League) offers an opportunity this Saturday for USA women to get on their nation's All-Time List for the 2-Mile Run.

Start List via meet website as of 2100 Thursday shows Jordan Hasay and Shannon Rowbury as USA entrants but not Gabe Grunewald who is, instead, shown in Friday night's 800m run.
