This question is part hypothetical, part historical: Should Mr. Cheserek win this event and the 5k (not making a prediction of this, by the way), he would have in this year of his collegiate career 5 NCAA titles: XC, the indoor double, and (hypothetically) these: Has this feat, or something close to it been accomplished before?

Rupp won all five in 2008-09 (plus a winning DMR anchor, and XC and indoor team championships).

^ Thanks for the info. I am inclined to say "I can't believe I forgot that," but I am finding it easier and easier to believe that I can forget lots of things. As for Rupp, he was a pretty good college runner -- I wonder whatever happened to him?

If frosh had been eligible in his day, Gerry Lindgren would have done it without breaking a sweat.

^Agree. In the process of forgetting that Rupp had done this, before I gave up & posted my question, I was looking through results from Lindgren's era, thinking perhaps/probably that he had done this or some version of it.

Didn't Lindgren go ahead with Prefontaine? I do remember Pre beating Lindgren in a major meet.

Lindgren was a running phenomena hard to comprehend. What a remarkable talent he was.

Re the race, I predict Cheserek will let the Texas Tech runner (can't remember how to spell his name ) set the pace, hanging a way back, then come up in the final two laps, move to the front and kick home the winner. The more challenging race will be the 5000m...but I wouldn't be surprized too much if he won that too.

They were far apart: their only NCAA meeting was in XC when Pre was a frosh and Lindgren was a redshirt senior. (Lindgren won, Pre was 3rd)

gh beat me to punch re: lindgren and limits of rules back then
they had quite a duel in the PAC 8 xc championships - Lindgren edging pre (famous picture) - but that's not an NCAA meet.

Stinson tried to go out hard and is tanking as a result.

Eh, nevermind, he seems like he is pretty controlled. The only question is what effect that will have on his kick.

Stinson loses 7th by a few inches, Oregon gets 15 rather than 17. Mo Ahmed cannot match the final sprint but beats KK.
