  • Will standing broad jump, HJ ever return to OGs?

I'm hoping to see a return of these two events to the Olympic Games someday. Also the tug-of-war and cross-country. ;-)

It appears I'm the only true track purist on here! :-)

      In a word: no.

Steve and I wrangled good-naturedly about this topic months ago...to such an extent that GH forbade further discussion!

Probably won't ever return to the Olympics, but I would like to see it.

That would be cool, if I don't become a 20m shotputter maybe, just maybe I'll make it as a tug-o-warist if thats a word.

I believe there is still a meet in Athens that competes the standing long jump. I jumped in it in '77 and was right behind Earl Bell in 8th place. I jumped 10' 6" which equalled my PR. First as I recall was Terry Albritton the shot putter and second was Al Fuerbach. Bell and I were the first non-throwers in the standings.

I don't know if I would want them to come back to the Olympics as I would not see anyone challenge Ray Ewry's reputation as the greatest standing jumper of all time.

              Cheers

Of course it would be interesting to see what some of these 40+ inch vertical jumpers could do.

Do you know the Olympic commitees reasoning for
not having cross-country as an Olympic sport.

Re: Will standing broad jump, HJ ever return to OGs?

One event I would love to see is the marathon time trial.

The marathon is truly the signature event of the connection between ancient athletics and the current age. Sure, there are other major events that connect those times in track and field, such as the discus and javelin, but the only event that exists purely as a result of legendary lore of history is the marathon.

And that bearer of news didn't run a race, he ran as fast as he could, all alone. No matching the pace of other contenders, just you and your will against time.

It would be a really tough race, but it would be interesting to see what kind of times could be achieved in such a competition.

And I would not seed contestants, such as in bicycle time trials, where the top entrants compete last. Start times would be determined by random draw, with no chance that any runner could even get within sight of another competitor during the race.

Nor would I have any minimum time standards for the race. I would require that those competing pay a sizeable entry fee, which would help avoid lark entries, and would favor those who could find supporting benefactors to support their efforts.

It would take days to finish an event like this, but it sure could generate a lot of conversation in the meantime. If someone put up a stunning time early in the competition, the conversation would rage about who might beat that time.

It WOULD take days to finish a marathon time-trial. So long that conditions would change so much that times would not be comparable. Better to run it bike-race style with just a minute or less between runners and let them overlap one another. With bar-coding technology it would not be hard to keep track of everyone's time and to keep runners apprised of who is running fast in front and behind them.

Uh, in this case I'm firmly with the "competition-is-king" crowd... The current system is just fine...
