  • world men's AOY thinking…

Its also seems tough to make a case against him for an overall AOY thinking about it...

Can he be penalized for not having the opportunity to run the last 3 of 4 DL meets?

No way James gets top spot with his loss and his low frequency of races.

I just don't know how to factor in the fact that US athletes don't have an opportunity to compete at either Commonwealth or Euros. Pars and Harting both have losses but have won the "big" comp and have thrown frequently against everyone. But Gatlin being undefeated I feel really gives him the edge.

I agree here Gatlin edges it for me and a 9.7 run at any remaining meets would seal it imo...but at the moment he just edges it ahead of Bondarenko. James doesnt run enough to win it as you said.

What about Renaud? He has to be in the mix somewhere

Completely forgot about him ..After taking that world record into consideration things change up a bit though that no height in Stockholm certainly hurts a bit.

                1) Renaud
                2) Gatlin
                3) Bondarenko

                Subject to change of course!!

Is indoors includes for the PV or is it solely the outdoor season?

I it is then Renaud is a no brainer with that WR. Indisputably the POY.

I thought indoors was not. But if it is, then I agree, Renaud walks away with this.

this needed its own thread, not to be part of the U.S. discussion

Wasn't sure if that was the case with all events or not. PV WR's are valid indoors or out but don't know if it counts.

                        GH?

I agree about Harting, but Pars is just 5-4 vs Fajdek at this point; hardly the sort of dominance you need to demonstrate as AOY.

For that same reason, I don't think Bondarenko would get it, because Barshim (and Ukhov, to a lesser extant) has been pushing him, and winning against him more and more as the season progressed. (Barshim can actually still end the year as first in the world)
If one of them breaks the WR before the end of the season, though...

The thing is Bondarenko and Barshim are both doing great things by historical standards, so a case can be made for both of them to be near the top of the AOY voting. Pars isn't quite at the same level - he's only 20th on the all-time list with his new PB from Zurich. And Fajdek has just thrown significantly farther than him.
